iTunes 7.6 problems

I upgraded to iTunes 7.6 today. Now when I try to access the iTunes Music Store, iTunes hangs in the middle of accessing the store. It becomes completely unresponsive. Not even a force quit works to kill it, so far I have only been able to restart the system to make the program quit. I will see if I can find the process and kill it with a kill -9, but to this point version 7.6 appears to not be able to access the iTunes store on my computer. Anyone else with this issue?

Sounds to me like Apple may have released some software that wasn't quite ready yet. Wouldn't be the first time, but usually they are better than this.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I am having the same problem you are. After applying the 7.6 update, I can no longer play eMusic previews in iTunes. Like you, I searched for other people experiencing this issue and found little information but your post to this forum.

I have not experienced the iTunes 7.6 problems that other users have reported. Other than this new eMusic incompatibility, everything works fine. One work around I found is that I can open eMusic previews using VLC Media Player or Quicktime by right clicking on the *.m3u and using 'open with'. I did some searching and found the m3u format is a 'Winamp media playlist'. Perhaps this incompatibility is related to other problems reported by other users on this thread.

Anyway, I have a workaround, but I find this issue annoying. I hope Apple is able to resolve this soon.

This looks like the APIs used to 'check status' on rented movies is what is causing the issue (at least on mine) since the error reports all point to a Quicktime issue in checking movies and movie states. I haven't used the rental feature, but I did migrate all my computer based movies to iTunes a while back to be able to catalogue them and use one interface to view them.

This is further supported by the 'announcement/fix' posted here.

So, you can either remove all your .mpg and/or .mpeg files (hopefully not .mpga files) or revert to iTunes 7.5.x.

I wonder when iTunes 7.6.x is going to be released to resolve this "little" glitch.

peace

You know... this problem is here with A LOT of people complaining. No one at apple is fixing it or even addressing the issue. Nice job guys.

I'm a big music person. I was a big mac person also. This issue and the fact that they aren't fixing it really ticks me off. I was looking for an alternative music program for macs because quite honestly I just want to play music and I can't. It hangs on every song, every time and slows my computer down to a screeching halt. No Ipod, no Iphone... nothing. Anyone have any good music player alternatives? If not I think I'll sell the mac and buy a pc. Screw this noise. It's unusable and pc's are looking better everyday.

After removing all .mpg and .mpeg files (I am using Visual Hub and Sound Converter to bring all my videos and music, respectively, into the 'proper' format for iTunes 7.6), I have not had any of the freezes. Although I did end up spending about $60 on these utilities since iTunes "Convert to AAC" and "Convert to play on Apple TV" failed to do any conversions...

Hey Wish1991, what version of iTunes did you reinstall? If it is pre- 7.6 then you have delayed it a bit. Don't re-upgrade to 7.6 and you'll be fine.

As long as I can get my gear working again... I am still curious when this is going to be resolved.

peace.

Hi Seagull~!

that's a nice post...

i dit what u described, and i noticed that several lines change under the "Open Files and Ports" window.. the thing is: i have 90% video and music content (purchased and/or my content, such as mpg shot with my dig camera, etc) on my EXTERNAL HDD (laCie 250 via FW400 on my PB G4).

my main iTunes content folder is on my PB's HDD, but the rest, 90%, is located on my ext HDD that i plug in only when i want to listen or watch content located outside my PB's HDD....

so like many of us, i did not have any problems before 7.6.... but now i do... and so I could notice that the lines that change on the "open files & ports" window refer to the "framedfork...rscr" on each folder the video and films are located... my guess is that iTunes 7.6 tries to 'clean or update' the location (resource?) of each file....

so this is all I can say, i have no answers yet....
hope this helps to keep on narrowing down the problem...

hi again,
i noticed that iTunes is trying to 'sort of update' the file(i guess) where the location of video/music files is stored....

/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIToolbox.fram ework/Versions/A/Resources/Extras.rsrc

/Volumes/Disco A/a Video/Schweiz/MOV01430.MPG --> this is the line(that changes quickly, searching or scanning all the folders outside my PB's drive) correponding to files that i am NOT playing at the moment, but causes iTunes to freeze... "Disco A" is one partition of the Ext HDD where video and music content is stored...

any clues?

All,

I had installed tune bar and an album art helper application quite a few versions ago, everything was golden. After I installed iTunes version 7.6.1, it was hanging all of the time. Activity monitor showed iTunes running at 104% of the processor.

*After reading this, I removed all of my 3rd party iTunes applications, and I went back to working again!!!!**

*So, look around in your applications folder and throw all of the 3rd party iTunes apps in the trash, and give it a go. Best of luck!**

Thank god!
