iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

So heres the thing. My iphone 4 stopped working unless i used speaker phone or headphone or bluetooth. I did not know what to do dumped my firmware dropped down one level same problem. Was reading your posts guys.. pocket lint can not cause your phone to be stuck in headphone mode its not possible strickly speaking from an egineering aspect. How ever your iphones software can get confused. Yup confused... What happend at least to me was I used my phone last in my car where i was fighting with my radio to link via blue tooth... Well long story short the iphone was definatly stuck in headphone mode..so i linked to the car repaired my bluetooh stuck the head phone in called my voice mail selected bluetooh.. watched the phone go to audio sources iphone, bluetooh, or speaker phone. chose iphone... and voila just like that it was restored. Mind you this is after wasting hours of my time on the phone with my cell provider who told me earliest i would get a replacement was july 27 2011, where today is june 20th 2011 so i kinda told them that was fubard and hung up... calmed down and retraced my steps so to speak... last good place was the car.. well voila it dawned on me the problem was a bad pairing.. as to pocket lint guys its not possible. at all.

OK, I managed to spill a little water in the headphone socket at the gym this morning and on the way to work, my phone turned itself onto "headphone mode". I tried absolutely everything to fix this, on/off, reset, calling from other phone, "jacksex", blowing, cotton bud, shaking, cursing...

Someone on this forum mentioned sucking the headphone hole and as a last resort I cupped my lips around it and sucked a full lung. iPhone works again! The sucking must create a strong vacuum which cleared the water/lint inside. It rocks to suck.

Its a really strange software problem!

On my wifes iPhone 4 (4.3.5) it started after she was out on a run - using her Bluetooth earjack

- Reset, restart, earjack in/out several times didn't work.

Then tried what Jack_astor suggest - and voila!

What to do:

- Connect a Bluetooth sound device (test it)

- Connect standard earphones

Call to the phone and in the menu - select the Bluetooth - or anything else than earphones!

Apple need to make a small update so its possible to change the sound mode, without one of these strange tricks!
