Classic Firmware 1.1: What's new?

Just downloaded Firmware Version 1.1. The minor issues I had (mainly sorting of Coverflow) remain... The cover-flow images seem a bit larger, but I might just be paranoid.

Anybody else notice something different???

Selecting an individual video from within the playlist will only play the selected track. Attempting to begin play by selecting the playlist itself and pressing "play" gives me a screen similar to the one you are seeing, showing a random track/artist/album (usually the last one you played) with track 1 of 0 and the time line reading 0:00-0:00. This is contrary to how it has worked in the past and as recently as firmware 1.0.3. Oddly enough, the one thing not affected by this is the Music Video playlist, which does seem to continue functioning correctly.

I've also found that the tv out onscreen display no longer pops up when pressing play/ pause on a video already in progress. The OSD only shows up when beginning playback or when changing the volume.

Great letter, Francis. I like the fact that you mentioned the sound not surrounding the user and being in the head instead. Will a recall take place? I don't know. I'm particularly disturbed by the fact that the incredibly high quality Wolfson DAC was replaced for a cheaper DAC. I just would like to have the problems solved and for the classic to have a custom EQ.

FYI - for what it's worth, I submitted my issues with firmware 1.0.3 and 1.1 on the iPod Feedback page one week ago today and I have yet to hear anything back from Apple Support--not even a canned e-mail thanking me for my submission.

I'm not holding out much hope here. I think we're stuck until they feel like releasing another update.

The 1.1 upgrade is usually in this folder on a Windows PC;
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates.

When you have found the 1.1 upgrade, follow the steps below;

1. Disconnect your iPod and close iTunes
2. Remove the files for 1.1 (delete them, move them to another folder, whatever).
3. Make sure you have both files for v1.0.3 in their proper location ie in the iPod software updates file (the one mentioned at the beginning of this message).
4. Reopen iTunes and select Edit > Preferences. A dialogue screen headed "iTunes" will open. On the tab marked "General", click the box labelled "Check for updates automatically". (The check box should now be clear.) Click OK at the bottom of the screen to close the iTunes dialogue screen.
5. Now connect your iPod.
6. Click the "Restore" button
7. Answer yes when asked if you want to install older firmware
8. Let the update do its thing

If you find that you do not have v1.0.3 on your computer (see step 3 above), there is a website (mentioned earlier in this thread) where you can download it;

http://rapidshare.com/files/73863240/1.0.3.zip.html

I hope this helps. If not, post again for more help.

Seems that after downgrading to 1.03 the iPod (80 gig) wont turn of, hold the pause button screen goes blank, release button iPod turns on. One again reverted up to 1.1 & iPod turns of but hissing back again. What with that & being repeatedly told by tech support & the Apple shop that the camera adapter will work on the Classic...which it wont I'm really getting fed up with this thing. I was considering getting a Mac ( not a raincoat ! ) but if this is what Apple is like I might as well stay with PC's & Windows.

Thank you Sue for your help.

Unfortunately I still cannot get it to work. I can get up to stage 6 but I don't get the option you describe in stage 7 of using older updates. It just says that it has noticed I've unchecked the automatic update search option and would I like it to search for updates. If I click 'check' then it just installs the 1.1 again and if i click 'cancel' it just stops the restore process.

I've tried doing this when i'm not connected to the internet and it still does not work as it just says to look for updates i need ot be connected to the internet even though i don't want to look for updates.

I really want to downgrade because i was given my ROBI as a birthday present and was really looking forward to using it 😟

I took mine down to the Apple Store after a week or so of the old "hiss and crackle." This is about an hour to 11/2 from my home...but I just wanted to talk to a live person. The guy who helped me couldn't get the hiss...but they gave me a new ipod, and told me I could try the 1.1 again if I wanted. I loaded it up and it's good! It has the 1.02, but it's fine for my purposes.

I'm thrilled with that attention. My faith is restored and I'm rocking (sans hiss) again.
