BSOD WUDFRD.sys & VISTA 64

Prior version of 7.6 I was unable to sync my IPhone. I used to get a BSOD with error message: "WUDFRD.sys". When getting this error I was unable to boot to windows... only after doing a restore in safe mode I was able to boot to windows. Apparantely, previous version I believe it was 7.5 did not support VISTA 64BIT.

I noticed that there was a new version 7.6 and it indicated that it supports VISTA 64BIT. I installed new version and voila... I was able to sync my IPhone with no issues... That's until I restarted my PC.

When I restarted my PC, I got same BSOD with error message: WUDFRD.sys
I was not able to boot to windows until I did a manual restore from safemode prior to ITunes 7.6

Does anyone have this problem or suggestions on resolving this problem ?

I don't know if this affects anything... but I have Logitech webcam.. I've heard that there may be some driver issues between Logitech & ITunes... but I don't know...

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Encountered the same problem with the supposed 64-bit release of iTunes 7.6 on Vista x64 - BSOD on reboot complaining about wudfrd.sys. The 'fix' is as follows:

PART 1
======
Follow osulaxxer's instructions to boot into Safe Mode, uninstall iTunes and get Windows to reboot. Hurrah!

PART 2
======
[What I've discovered]

If you're brave enough then proceed, otherwise wait for Apple/Microsoft/Whoever to get provide an 'official fix'. However, this worked just fine for me.

1. Install Service Pack 1 for Vista

2. When running fine, install iTunes 7.6 x64 version (itunes64setup.exe).

3. Don't restart yet! Now download and install GEAR 64-bit drivers ( http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm)

4. Once done, you can now reboot, and fingers crossed it will all work fine!

I am getting a similar problem. I am not getting a Blue screen of death, but a black screen right before the login in screen. All HD activity stops and nothing happens, just a black screen... of death.

No error messages, nothing. I can't install SP1 on vista yet, since my language is not supported, I tried just installing the GEAR 64 drivers and a new installation of itunes, restarted and got the same result.

Any other fixes? Or do I have to wait for SP1 to come out Swedish, however long that will take.

I think I have a solution to this problem. The root of the cause is that GEAR driver that itunes "stealth" installs on your computer...

You need to manually remove key by key from regedit and certain other files from your Windows catalog. The solution is explained here.

EDIT

I have now completed all of the steps from the link I gave and my computer is booting AND itunes is working. What happens is that itunes will give you a warning when it starts that certain keys have been removed. Everything works though, you can still sync your ipod, import CDs and stuff, I have not tried burning CDs, which is something mentioned in the warning, but then again who uses itunes for burning?

i have never seen the BSOD's that are described here in this thread, but i do have a BSOD problem that will not go away, and it was pretty easy to figure out that it was iTunes.

i am currently running a fresh install (patched up to sp1) of Vista Ultimate x64 that has literally nothing installed onto it, accept... you guessed it iTunes!! (for my 4gig iPhone.) As soon as i installed iTunes (to upgrade the iPhone to 2.0) my laptop now gets this mysterious blue screen overnight. my assumption (I work in IT, and Software Test) is that the apple software is incorrectly using the allocated system memory, that the OS has already allocated for shared video ram.

this is why i think this....

3gb ram = smooth sailing (w/ Vista SP1, and x64 iTunes installed)
4gb ram = daily crashes and BSOD's - ram has been replaced by newegg 3 times, so i am more than 90% sure that its not the ram. that i can mostly cause to happen at will by opening and closing more than one media player a few times.

so all that leaves me with is the knowledge that my machine is a stud with 3 gb ram, and a dud with 4gb ram when iTunes is installed... that doesnt seem very cool does it?

only a media player can crash my system (which leads me to believe shared dll's are the cause)... before i wiped the system clean to test a little, i was able to run my favorite video game UT3 which is massively cpu, and memory intensive with no crashes... but once i use a media player and close it... poof... its blue screen central.
