You connect the VCR with the usual RCA leads (possibly via a scart to RCA lead) to the Canopus, the the Canopus to the Mac via firewire (6 pin to 4 pin).
Could it be I'm having problems because of iMovie 5.0.2???? Should I upgrade????? Or should I still try to use the iMovie but get a different link?????? all I get is stuttering and it gets stuck. I haven't been able to import anything into iMovie... I've tried to isolate the problem... tried different vcrs, different firewire cables, into main and auxiliary drives.... what's left???? Is it my Pyro or the iMovie??????
You can use iMovie 5.0.2 but you have to transfer your video material to a compatible (digital in) camcorder. This is easy if you use the component (yellow/red/white) cables that came with your camera and connect them to the corresponting jackets on your VCR. If you set your video in "play" the viewfinder will display the material when properly set to record from VCR.
You are ready for importing and editing in iMovie when you have rewinded your tape and connect your DVcamcorder to your Mac using the firewire cable and open iMovie.
And if Your VHS tapes is some Years old they might have some drop-outs and reduced
quality. If so take a look on Canopus ADVC-300. Got one very satisfied - buy pricey.
I looked at buying a canopus on ebay and the owner said it was a long, drawn out process.
Worked for him transferring his videos, but took forever.... I probably will sell my Pyro and not do anything with my videos.... oh well!
