I have successfully transferred from my SR11 to final cut in the past and now find that neither of my Intel Macs will recognize the camera, other than it showing up as an external disk. I can convert the video using other software but not FCP or iMovie. Any thoughts on why this might be? I really liked doing it through Final Cut!
It was very nice reading all that you said. Thank you.
My question is about after you are done editing in iMovie '08. I have the SR11 and a Apple TV. After you are done editing, can you put a file back on the camera so I can use the Camera as a player? Since it is 60GB, I wanted to keep a couple of edited videos on the camera so when I am at other peoples houses i can use the HDMI cable out of the camera and show them the videos.
I just bought a SR11, shot some video in various quality settings, and tried uploading into iMovie 08 just a few minutes ago. It works.
The bummer is that the Sony software disk isn't compatible with a Mac.
Nonetheless, I connected the SR11 via USB port and booted iMovie. Then in iMovie: file>import from camera> and it worked like a champ. No problem.
I had worried about compatibility for reasons shown in this dialog, but I am now satisfied (for the time being....final judgement after I edit and burn a disc or upload to a web app).
I have successfully loaded both HD and SD files on my Macbook Pro and have used iDVD to make DVDs of iMOVIES using SD files. My manual warns that "DVD media containing AVCHD [HD} footage should not be used with DVD based players or recorders as the DVD player/recorder may fail to eject the media and may erase its contents without warning." Yikes! do I really have to buy a Blu-ray Disc player to play movies using my HD recorded files?
I have encountered the same problem with my HDR-SR11. I am using a Mac Pro, so there is not an issue with processor speed. I have tracked the problem down to a cheap USB charger type cable. Once I connected my SR11 with a bona fide genuine USB cable it moved on from the preparing... message to the very happy 'Connected' message.
Hope this helps. I am going to throw out all the cheap cables which have wasted hours of my time!
If you are using iDVD to make your movie, they are not AVCHD. To do a AVCHD movie you would need to use different software to make a AVCHD (Blu-ray) movie, like Toast 9 or Toast 10. Disc created in the AVCHD format using Toast (or similar) software is where the concern comes in. With iDVD you have nothing to worry about.
I just skimmed a lot of this as there was a lot to read, but what I gathered, and would like to get confirmed is that if, in fit of disgust, I deleted iMovie '08 and replaced it with iMovie 6, I am completely screwed with this camera.
