False "Invalid User Name or PAssword" message

Trying to restart my iMac with another user logged in I get a dialog telling me so and that I therefore need to enter an admin user name and password. When I do so I get "Invalid User name and Password" message even though the user name and password are correct admin's. I even changed them and the same thing happens. What's up?

I am having similar issues.

I have tried booting into Single User mode and changing the password, which works, and I can now login as root, which is great.

HOWEVER, if I go to the Accounts preferences pane, everything is marked "standard" instead of "Admin". The box is there to "Allow this user to administer this computer", but if I check it, it will not stay checked; changing to another user and back, or attempting to lock the pane, results in the box unchecking itself!

So, every account is "standard", and I can't change any of them.

It may also be of note that when logged in as myself, alarmingly, my Mail accounts seem to have disappeared and the password I use to protect "Journler" (a third party note-keeping app) isn't accepted.

What on earth is happening?!

Ok, this is going to sound absolutely crazy but I know how to solve your problem.

When you enter your user name and then your password for your Admin account hit "return".

Don't click on restart or shut down with your mouse...just hit return.

I'm serious. I've been plagued with this issue since installing Leopard.

Try it and come back and let us know what happens.
