ADD CALL - MERGE CALL - 3 WAY CALLING FEATURE: How does it work?

I'm on o2 and It's never worked for me, when I try it, it only switches from one caller to another, putting the other caller on hold.

Ah I have been fighting with this for a while. I too am in the UK with O2 and cannot merge calls. I have called O2 a few time and they insist that it works when they try it with their iPhones, however I and three other colleagues' iphones will not merge calls they just swap or try and merge then return to the last active caller....?

O2 have told me that there must e a problem with the handset but Since that advice I had my original iPhone stolen and have bought a brand new 16GB version which behaves in exactly the same way.

There is definitely a problem, but I cannot get O2 to admit it....
