I have a broadband connection with Tiscali and it worked fine until last night when I installed Tiger. I can still use dial-up but there's an error msg when I try to connect to B/b. I rang Tiscali and they told me that their system is not yet compatible with Tiger but they're working on it. They suggested that I downgrade to Panther; is that viable/possible/advisable???

Hi...I'm with Tiscali and have no problems with broadand & Tiger. What is the actual problem / error?
I have the same problem as you, and downgrading -is silly to me.
The question is : what modem are you using?
I have come as far as finding out that my drivers are not up to date.
And tiscali is hopeless so far to offer any help.
Apple too, so far gives no info about which drivers I need.
And the guys who supply the modem 'sagem' give me many options of which driver type but I do not know which one to install.
I need help too but maybe this will give you some ideas...
`but `I would like to be back online too!

Hi, Mark. Well, the first thing I noticed was not the usual confirmation of being connected but a notice that reads: "Internet Connect. An incorrect PPP option has been set. Please verify your settings and try again". I then noticed that the modem, which hitherto had one light on and one light flashing until connection was made at wake-up or start-up, had both lights on immediately.
I tried disconnecting all of the phone connections around the house and then reconnecting them. Then I rang Tiscali and spoke with a woman who informed me that they are still working on Tiger.... I have now discovered that my Epson C84 printer won't work with Tiger either. So, I have linked it up to my old Bondi Blue imac, running 9xx; at least I got something printed. I'm seriously wondering if I can re-instal Panther.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi there....I have had such network problems with my G5 at my office that I have returned back to Panther. Tiger 10.4.2 will be released in a couple of weeks, which I hope will address all of the network issues. Is your modem USB or Ethernet? There is an issue with USB modems and OSX, so you may have to purchase an Ethernet unit. I have the Zoom DSL unit which cost about £120 and wprks fine with Tiger.
Hi, Mark, and thanks for your continuing interest! Sorry to hear about your problems. I have a USB connection but I guess I'll wait to see if Tiscali sort it before shelling out £120! It worked fine right up until the fateful moment of upgrading. It leaves me with a slightly empty pit-of-stomach feeling, but there aren't many options at the moment.

All ADSL in the UK works with Tiger if you ditch the USB adsl modem provided and replace it with an ethernet ADSL router.
usb modem require drivers
ethernet modems don't.

thanks, Tim; that's two responses with that suggestion so, despite the apparent high cost (I think that £120 was mentioned previously), I guess that is the route I'll have to take.
Thanks again
Thanks again
It is a misconception that ADSL routers are expensive you can purchase a used 5861 efficient networks adsl router on ebay for as little as £15. You can purchase a new adsl modem/router from solwise for £40.
All,
I have the identical probelms on upgrading to Tiger. On speaking to Tiscali (who by the way say they don't provide technical support for mac!) told me that there are no drivers yet available for SAGEM ASDL Fast 800 USB modems for Tiger. Apple Care however told me that the driver will be available from the 5th July (in 10.4.2?),
I think I'll wait until then. One other thing that has frustrated me about this is that in having to downgrade back to 10.3.5 my OS seems to have lost some stability I hpe going back up to Tiger in a few weeks will remedy this.
Cheers
Iain

Save yourself the hassle just get an ethernet device, when using USB modems you always going to be chasing new drivers.
Tim,
How will I go about getting an ethernet router that will be compatible with my modem?

HERE'S THE SOLUTION TO YOUR TIGER-BUGGERED UP TISCALI/SAGEM/ BROADBAND CONNECTION:
Well I did the same, upgraded to OS X 10.4 then 10.4.1, neither of which left me with a working Broadband connection. Well thanks alot Apple, well done, charging £85 for this debacle. Tiscali support was worse than useless. (Don't bother calling them... they'll happily flog their wares to Mac users but then fail to support them). Unusually, no one seemed to have a solution on these discussion pages. I was stuck, and with the prospect of having to go back to 10.3.x
But... thankfully after a quick email to SAGEM (the ADSL Modem manufacturer), who to their credit responded almost immediately, I learn that they have just produced a new driver which is supposed to cure the problem. The driver is: MX 3.0.3 INT
You can download it free from:
http://lgsagem.free.fr
The question is: why couldn't Tiscali be bothered to contact SAGEM? Simple, because they want to make loads of money from all the 0870 callers to them who have the same problem.
By the way, I hate Apple's 0870 call line, ripping us off with extra charges for support which we have already effectively paid through the nose for when we buy their products.

Hope this cures your problems. Trouble is... how you gonna read this posting now that you've lost your connection?!?!?!?!?!

thanks, Paul. I've ordered an ethernet router, as recommended by others, as I think that that will protect against future problems of this kind. In the meantime, I'll download the driver you mention. Thank goodness I still have the last vestiges of dial-up!
Best wishes and thanks again to you and others.

There is not an ethernet router available that is compatible with your usb modem. You would replace your usb modem altogether with an ADSL Router. An adsl rotuer is an ethernet adsl modem combined with a router in one box.
I chanced upon the new driver for the Sagem Fast 800 on the Sagem support website last night, although it was only the French support site and not the UK. Haven't seen any announcements.
Downloaded it, flashed to the Tiger Mac, installed and despite a surprisingly long restart it worked straight away. My Mac is now groaning under the weight of a hundred widgets.
I did try buying an ethernet router, but it rarely worked due to the incompetence of one or more of my ISP, my phoneline provider and me, all of whom blame the others. I might not like my USB modem but at least it works slightly more often than it doesn't.
