Tiger & Tiscali Broadband problems

I have a broadband connection with Tiscali and it worked fine until last night when I installed Tiger. I can still use dial-up but there's an error msg when I try to connect to B/b. I rang Tiscali and they told me that their system is not yet compatible with Tiger but they're working on it. They suggested that I downgrade to Panther; is that viable/possible/advisable???

Thanks, Mark. I d/loaded the french driver on Sunday and at least it made the modem's eyes light up properly, which was something. However, I continued to get a message that 'An incorrect PPP option has been set. Please verify your settings and try again'. I double-checked with Tiscali (telling them about the French driver, by the way) and re-did things but to no avail. My ethernet router arrived this afternoon; I've now installed it and the lights come on but the message is the same!

Yours frustratedly

There were two drivers on the site, a French one (the 8/35 suggesting it might have the France-only vpi/vci settings) and an international. Which one did you use? There is a driver on Sagem's UK support site now anyway.

My French one (I live in France) worked. After the installation and restart I opened up Network Preferences, put in the account name and password under the PPP tab, clicked Apply Now and it worked immediately.

It would be better if you could get the ethernet router to work and I'm surprised that you got the same message. For starters I thought that came from Internet Connect when it tries to connect you and failed, but with a router it handles the connection for you and you don't need Internet Connect.

In my limited experience you just point your browser (IE tending to be compatible) with an address of something like http://168.192.1.1 to get the set up page, set up the UK settings (PPPoA, vpi/vci 0/38, VC multiplexing, I believe) with your account details and you're away. Or at least that's the theory... What router is it?

Well, as for the modem, I installed the French one, actually, but it's interesting that there is now a UK one.

As for the router, which is a Netgear, the DG632, which I'd prefer, of course, I'm at this moment downloading IE and will then attempt to go to the address you mention, which is also mentioned in the paperwork for the router. I'll get back with the results.

Thanks for your help, Mark

All,

I have been unable to download either the French or Int version of the 800/840 drivers. They are on the page but the download arrow is a dead link. Other drivers download fine! Makes me think they have pulled the new drivers as they are not quite right!

The following driver: Fast-800-OSX-v303-INTL.dmg was downloaded from the UK site last night (link below). Reinstalled Tiger and it gave me a "check your PPoE settings" error - which I am sure are the same as before!

This is getting frustrating!

What is the make of your ADSL router? If its d-link or netgear you may find that it wont configure very well with safari you may need to use IE or Firefox.

In your system preferences goto your sharing preference pane and shorten the computer name to something of 6 characters or less.

Then goto your network preferences and set your ethernet settings to use DHCP.

Does the router assign you with an ip address of the range 192.168.0.x ?

The router is netegear, Tim. The instructions that came with it are (inevitably) Windows-centric, but the main problem seems to be that my iMac doesn't seem to recognise its existence! I reinstalled IE but that made no difference.

One thing I have found is that on the many occasions in the past few days that I have gone into network preferences or any associated settings, DHCP has never been mentioned, let alone available as an option. Perhaps it will only appear if/when the router's presence is felt... So, the router doesn't assign an IP address as yet.

I DO feel as if I'm approaching a solution with all the help, it's just taking time!

DHCP has never been mentioned, let alone available as an option. Perhaps it will only appear if/when the router's presence is felt... So, the router doesn't assign an IP address as yet.

1. Connect your netgear router to your Macintosh with a network cable.

2. goto your system preferences > network.

3. Click on the bar 'Location' and select new location.

4 . Name your new location 'Tiscali' for example. Click OK.

5. click on the bar 'Show' and select network port configuration.

6 . Untick all the network ports except 'Built-in Ethernet'

7. Click on the bar 'Show' and select 'Built-in-Ethernet'

8. Click the TCP/IP tab.

9. Make sure ' Configure IPv4' is set to 'Using DHCP'

10. Then click 'Apply Now'

The router should now automatically assign a local IP address to your Mac. You should see in the network prefereneces an ip address subnet mask and router ip address appear.

Then try using http://192.168.0.1

btw some netgear routers use http://192.168.1.1 also.

Wow, Tim, that's really amazing! What a chance meeting!

I, too, was a fan of his from when I read his column in MacWorld and my iMac was Bondi Blue in colour! I now receive his weekly columns from NY Times [NYTDirect@nytimes.com]; he is a techie with a really good sense of humour; he's also a magician. But you probably knew all that already!

Best wishes
