Tiger & Tiscali Broadband problems

I have a broadband connection with Tiscali and it worked fine until last night when I installed Tiger. I can still use dial-up but there's an error msg when I try to connect to B/b. I rang Tiscali and they told me that their system is not yet compatible with Tiger but they're working on it. They suggested that I downgrade to Panther; is that viable/possible/advisable???

Dear Tim,

Strangely enough the html modem configuration set up window says that my ip is 192.168.1.1 but then in System preferences/network it says that my ip is 192.168.1.2 and that my router is 192.168.1.1

I have made sure that I am using PPPoA and that the vpi is 0, vci is 38 and VC is checked. The modem dsl light just keeps blinking, it's never solid except when I uplugged the filter and plugged the RJ-11 port directly into the wall jack. Although, even after doing that the internet still won't work. Comtemplating trying to take modem back and getting another one?

That is not strange, the html page is not your ip but the router's ip.. The modem is 192.168.1.1 and your computer is 192.168.1.2

it's never solid except when I uplugged the filter and plugged the RJ-11 port directly into the wall jack.

That sounds like a dodgy filter. I would replace that with a known good filter.

Although, even after doing that the internet still won't work.

D-link modem's can be buggy and don't work very well with Safari have you tried configuring it with Internet Explorer.

But putting that aside I would not use a dlink-300g anyway unless I was using it in conjunction with a router. It is just a modem and does not have a combined router.

If you purchased an ADSL router(that is an adsl modem/router combined) you would have the added benifit of firewall security and the ability to network with other computers in the future.

If you purchased a combined adsl modem/router/wireless access point you would be able to have wireless internet.

Thanks Tim,

I think I will attempt to take this one back. It's just a modem and doesn't have a router. I called Apple Care and apparently they will call me back after they have done some research (very promising). I do want to eventually buy Airport Express or some kind of wireless networking device. Can you recommend another modem that I can buy in London (not at the Apple store since this is where I bought the D-Link) that will move me towards having broadband up and running as well as future wireless capabilities? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I think the apple store in Regent Street is a great store however they have a poor range of networking devices.

Many stores on Tottenham Court Road sell a bigger variety of ADSL routers. But to be honest the best sources of ADSL routers are online.

If you want a cheap all in one box you can purchase from PC world at the bottom of tottehem Ct road get a linksys WAG54G. The WAG54G is an adsl modem/router/wifi access point all in one box. My only comment about these routers is that they don't have a massive wireless range so are only suitable for small premises. So if you want wifi for your powerbook in the average sized flat in London then your ok, however if you need wifi for an entire 3 bed house then the WAG54G is not suitable.

When I set up wifi for my clients I use WAG54g for small premises but for larger places I use efficient networks 5861's in conjunction with airport expresses. Or I use a dsl modem + a linksys WRT54G (wifi router).

Just reading this thread and see that the Sagem 800 usb modem problem is supposedly cured when updated with the new driver 8.0.3. But having installed Tiger 10.4, and the new 8.0.3 driver i still have the problem of not being able to see the adaptor in the list of connections. The Sagem monitor software does not see the modem!, it says it is disconnected, and the lights on the modem are constantly green, even the adsl lights stays on when the phone line is disconnected!?!?
Should i be trying to connect to it via the "Built in ethernet"?? i cant understand why, after installing the driver , it doesnt appear?!?!
Any one help!

Dear Alby (am I presuming too much?)

Speaking/writing only for myself, I found the whole Sagem thing just too much hassle and eventually bought an "...ADSL Router. An adsl rotuer is an ethernet adsl modem combined with a router in one box." [acknowledgements to Tim Haigh, who really sorted me out!]. I now have no problems at all and it's permanently connected to broadband.

Hi there:

I just wanted to say thanks a lot for your advice. I'm hardly a tech head, but I signed up with Wanadoo, bought a Netgear DG632 router off the net, and it worked pretty much straight out of the box by following some easy instructions. the only problem i had was that I couldn't remember my password!

This was after wanadoo said that it doesn't support tiger and the two or three people who I spoke with on the phone sounded very wobbly indeed.

Turns out I only needed this message board.

thanks
