Printing/Tiger/HP 6110 AIO

Major problems with my HP 6110. As others have posted, web-based printing hopeless with ++ blank pages, random printed pages. All browsers the same. Sometimes it stalls mid document but that was happening with 10.3 too. Word Doc printing OK. I have tried these steps:
~trashed all HP software, reinstalled new drivers from HP
~reinstalled Tiger
~repaired disk permissions
~ replaced printer cartridges
~ Reset printer
~downloaded GIMP drivers hjis
~tried USB direct, no better than bonjour network
~ ready to give up. Apple has not been able to fix. HP same. Suggest ppl don't buy HP printers until Apple straightens this mess up. I can see I am not the only one.

I tried what you said about Firefox and it works! In fact, it works for me with Safari too. (same thing, except under Safari print prefs instead of Firefox, make sure the "Print... in headers and footers" is unchecked).

So it looks like you can do either. You can have the header/footer if you set the margins or you can just not have the header/footer.

For those of you who don't know how to change margins, select "File" from the menu, select "Page Setup", which should be right above the "Print". Select the "Paper Size" tab, go to the end and select "Manage Custom Sizes..." click the + button and make a name and enter the correct margins. Hit "OK" and the next time you select the "Paper Size" tab, you'll see your custom settings.

So it seems there's a few solutions to this problem... 1. Use different printer drivers. 2. Change margins 3. Don't print footer/header information

I have followed ifelix directions. just a lot of pages going throught he printer.

then installed gimp and hpjis and redid permissions... dumped old preferences and now i continue to get this messge

"The process smb stopped unexpectedly with status 1"

i called HP they say this printer doesn't support sharing..

But i do know that i did this when i had 10.2.8.

I see I'm not the only one tearing my hair out over the Tiger/6110 issue (I recently upgraded to 10.4.4 from 10.2.8). I, too, unintalled, reinstalled, downloaded, rebooted, changed settings, and changed USB cables -- anything and everything suggested everywhere, to no avail.

Paul, thanks for the "Fast Normal" and setting suggestions. This is the only solution suggested in the forum that I tried that actually now allows me to print e-mails and web pages without the tops getting cut off or blank pages flying out. At least I can now print somewhat normally again, albeit I have to be mindful of the right settings when I do.

I haven't had a problem printing from any of the Microsoft Office applications so far. I did have problems with PDF/Adobe which works intermittently.

I've been having a "lively" spat with a support rep at HP for the last two days, via e-mail (you'll notice that "Live" tech support isn't available for us Mac people, and we're only offered e-mail and phone; they fail to tell you that the phone costs $60 for 30 minutes of help! We can all buy new printers for that.)

The HP people are saying they are really "working on it" and that we should all just keep checking the HP site for updates. They claim that it's been hard keeping up with their software updates because Apple keeps coming out with new updates for Tiger. They also claim it's not just an HP problem -- that other company's printers are having similar issues with Tiger. Whatever. It's a shame because the upgraded features in the software (for scanning, copying, HP Image, etc., are pretty cool).

You'd think given how powerful and influential Steve Jobs is these days, he could force his hand with product companies that treat Mac users like red-headed stepchildren.

P.S. One last question to anyone reading: How to you stop from having your printing pages from being printed in reverse order? This has happened since I installed the new printer software. I keep checking the settings, but the printer seems to have a mind of it's own on this. Any suggestions?

To change the order in which your pages are printed you go under the "Paper Handling" section (third drop down menu) and select the Page Order that you want, Normal (eg. page 1 first) or Reversed (page 1 last).

Once you have all your settings selected, you can save them as a Preset (second drop down menu).

Printing wirelessly can be a bit tricky. I assume you are trying to print using a printer server? You have to make sure your printer server is compatable with a Mac (Not all of them work on a Mac). Second, it is going to be a bit of a pain to try to print to a printer not really designed to be networked (eg. OfficeJet 6110) as HP does not support this.

You'll need to download alternate drivers as the HP drivers will not allow network printing. You can get them here:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

You have to installl both programs and reboot first before trying to add your printer again. Make sure you manually select the hpijs drivers.

I remember getting that error before, but I can't remember whether it was b/c I was using a print server that didn't support Mac or I was using incorrect drivers. The other problem is that the printer server is not compatible with the printer. Also, it is worth noting that you can't use the printer's other functions through a print server (eg. scanning). You can only print.

I went through the entire rain dance trying to get my 6110 to work with Tiger. HP support gave me their procedure for deleting and installing the "new" 6110 software. I work for a printing company and support all the Macs so I am reasonably competent troubleshooting them. This problem drove me nuts!

Does anyone at HP actually sit down and test their Mac drivers? Do they listen to their customers when they tell them that lots of other people are complaining?

I was using Gimp-print configured with the 600/600c drivers and Firefox but something in Gimp-print got corrupted and I got printouts with condensed type and no line-feeds.

My wife was all over me because she couldn't print her Food Network recipes.

I finally figured I'd wasted enough time on this and went out and bought a Canon MP780. It works beautifully with Tiger and prints faster. It was $250 I didn't want to spend, but my wife is speaking to me again.

I really liked my 6110 when I was using Jaguar, but when I bought my new iMac with Tiger the 6110 became a boat anchor.

I'm disappointed with HP's lack of support for Mac users.

I solved my hp 6110 aio and my os x 10.4.4 printing wirelessly problem

gimp print 4.2.7.0
espgs-7.07.1.ppc
and i downloaded the hp drivers from hp on the web. i downloaded the most recent ones...

and it worked.... i had read that the ghost thing was not needed..but when nothing worked... i said i had nothing to lose.

thanks for all the help from everyone

Has anyone ben able to use their 6110 for anythign other than printing? Several months ago I was trying to scan documents using the software HP updated for Tiger to no avail. Always hung when trying to initailize the scan app. I've had the same boat anchor dilema, trying to decide whether to just get a new one since all I've been able to do with it since upgrading to Tiger is print (which as we know has been problematic).

So, anyone have any luck with anything other than printing?

Thanks,
John

John!!!

Holy Sh.......SHOWBOAT!!

I've been so caught up in the same dramas as everyone else in the internet/blank pages dept, that I forgot that this printer's scanning software doesn't work well w/Tiger either!

That's it!! I'm buying a new printer!! We're supposed to be advancing... this whole drama makes me feel like we're still playing w/dot matrix printers!

Long live MAC...but I'm out of this discussion ... HP you're outta here for good at my casa!!

Good luck to the rest of you..."TJ"

I almost hate to say this with everyone having so many problems but my HP 6110 just fine with Tiger 10.4.4. I can scan, copy, print and fax with no problems what so ever.

For what it's worth before I upgraded from Panther to Tiger I deleted all of the HP 6110 files, everything. Rebooted, repaired permissions and went the upgrade route to Tiger. Prior to upgrading I downloaded the 10.4.3 combo update and the current HP software. When I upgraded I did not install any drivers except the HP drivers.

After upgrading to Tiger I immediately ran the 10.4.3 combo update. Rebooted and repaired permissions. Then I installed the HP 6110 software. After the install I repaired permissions and rebooted. No problems at all. I can scan, copy and print.

Not sure how my system is different than others but my HP 6110 works just fine so I know that it can work.
