New D-Link Router will not let my iPod Connect to the internet?
We just got a new d-link wireless router (DIR-615) It works on other computers fine but on my ipod it connects to the router but whenever I try to use Safari or other things like Mail, Stocks, weather etc. it just says "Safari cannot connect to the server" Or "error retrieving data" (For stocks and weather). Does anyone know what to do? It works on other routers, but not on our new one.
I think not. From the information you gave earlier, it looks to me as if your iPod IS connecting to the router (192 series) but that your computer is connected directly to the IP source (74.210.122.88).
OK, then that other one is the IP number of the service you connect to. With both having IP numbers in the same series, we need to go back to square one. . . .
When you enter the Settings panel, WiFi is at the top. Click on that and we are shown a panel with WiFi at the top ON/Off ( should be ON), then below, "Choose a network." The top network should be yours, then any other networks the device can see, then Other. Below that, Ask to Join Networks (should be ON).
The short display that shows basic details of your network, ought to display, from left to right, a check-mark, network name, a lock (if the router has a password) a radio strength signal, and a white arrow in a blue circle.
Click on that white arrow/blue circle. Apart from Forget this Network at the top, the information here should be selection of DHCP, BootP or Static. You have probably chosen DHCP.
Beneath is the IP address. In my case, the router has the number 10.0.0.10 which is consistent with the router (10.0.0.2). As your router allocates IP numbers in the 192 series, 192.168.0.196 for the computer and 192.168.0.197 for the iPod, the router should have a number like 192.168.0.x (I would guess 2 or 254 is the missing x). The Subnet mask in between is probably a number like 255.0.0.0.
What you should have now is a DNS number. You might find this is the same number as the router, or it may be in a series like 74.x.x.x.x (from your ISP), or another number that they have provided. There are also the Open DNS numbers like 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. You would probably be better off using DNS numbers that work with your computer (presuming you have these entered).
The final part is for Proxy settings and I would take a guess that, with a home network, you have selected OFF. If this is not the case, then I would start there.
You might also try Renew Lease, which asks the router for a new bunch of settings (you proably end up with the same ones).
I have set up my touch for several different networks and a number of different routers and rarely have problems -- some services (usually pay-for) have off-days like we all do. Have you managed to use any other service (does Ontario have free wifi, say in Starbucks)? That would help confirm if the router were the problem rather than the iPod touch.
Ah, a glimmer. The DIR-615 from D-Link is a router that transmits using the 802.11n standard while the iPod touch only works with 802.11b and 802.11g standards. A router should step down, but maybe this D-Link one does not. Try setting the signal from the router (you will need to enter the configuration file using a browser from your computer) to 802.11g instead.
I am running out of ideas here. I know that you have used the "forget this network" button before, but there is another in the Settings>General>Reset panel: Reset Network Settings.
I would then suggest going through the process of restarting the router then the iPod to see if that helps. Have you tried to enter settings manually?
Well, we had to change the password because we were having some problems connecting to the router with any computer. My iPod seems to be working again, so I think the problem is fixed, not sure what it was though.
Unfortunately, it's stopped working (again). It did this before, it started working again all of a sudden, then it quit again. There seems to be nothing wrong, maybe just a direct compatibility issue...
I the advanced tab go to "Firewall Settings" and set the TCP and UDP to "Endpoint Independent" Not sure if you need both, because I changed them both at the same time, fixed my problem. Hope that helps.
Unfortunately, it stop working again the day after that...But thanks anyway. Changing it to WPA worked....for a day. But thank you for answereing even though my topic was old 🙂.
