Sagem F@ST 800

Hi there guys Ive recently taken the plunge and ordered a Mac Mini which should hopefully arrive in the next couple days. The only concern I have is will it be compatible with my current Broadband package, I currently use Tiscali 2Meg going through a Sagem F@ST 800 which connects via USB. I asked my ISP and they kindly informed me although Tiscali probably works with a Mac they offer zero support for it (nice way to treat a 5 year customer)

Oh by the way Im not sure what version of Tiger I'll be running, basically whatever it ships with

Thank you for your time.

You are going to need Tiger-compatible OS X driver software to use this USB-interface modem with your Mac. Many people have run into big problems with getting their USB interface modems working with Tiger using the drivers written for earlier OS X versions. If that software is not available, you won't be able to use your broadband connection with a Mac - and the best solution would be to replace that USB-inteface modem with an ethernet interface modem (none of which require drivers).

Hi Gareth

After calling Tiscali and Apple numerous times for hours and hours without any luck at all im still having real problems connecting......
I had it working the other day and the internet was fine, ive just re-installed Tiger and the messgae coming up is incorrect PPP or cant find correct PPP etc... Tiscali advise connecting to PPPoA which doesnt come under the mac settings but i've selected PPPoA on the Sagem installation driver (which i downloaded)

Please help if you can!

Best
Sophie

Just for info, as I see you now have evrything working with the standard Sagem USB modem...

I use Tiscali BUT have ditched the USB modem for a Netgear DG632 ADSL Router.

The reasons are simple -
* it's faster, way faster!
* you can plug an AirPort into it right out of the box for wireless, AirTunes, remote printing, and multiple (routed) clients, etc.
* it's more secure (a proper firewall).

HTH,
Pete.

I have a Mini Mac and Tiscali broadband but I can't get the Mac Mini to locate the modem. I have tried it on my old Imac and Tiscali works fine, howvever beacuse I'm using OS X 10.4 Tiger on the Mini Mac it can't find the modem. I've tried the drivers from the Sagem website but this still doesn't work and have reinstalled the modem several times.
Has anybody got any ideas as I'm close to sending the modem back to Tiscali and there so called support means that they don't offer support for USB modems.
Good work Tiscali!!

This is another same old same old usb dsl modem story.

I am sorry to say this has been going on for over 5 years now.

The USB modems given away by UK ISP's should never be used. They just don't work properly. At best they work intermittently at worst they cause kernel panics.

Only ethernet devices work properly. USB should not be used for networking.

All broadband is compatible with a Macintosh if you use an ethernet modem.

Hi Pete - Thanks for the post. I called Tiscali before I signed up with them and said that I was about to buy a Powerbook and asked if they supported Macs ?. They said "yes as long as it's OSx 10". I bought the Powerbook and now they don't want to know. I have had a nightmare trying to connect to the internet (am sending this from my windows machine).

I will go out and buy the Netgear machine tomorrow 🙂. Do you have any advice on settings etc. Thanks in advance for the help
