Apple TV Freezes on Apple Logo with HDMI (i.e. stuck, crashes, hangs)

My Apple TV constantly crashes and freezes on the Apple logo. Only way to fix it is to unplug the unit and plug it back in. This is my second unit after going to the Apple store and getting another new one. I'm syncing to a PC running Vista & iTunes.

From what I understand, it's a HDMI problem (connected to Onkyo receiver via HDMI) and has been going on since the 2.0 upgrade (currently running 2.0.2).

It's now almost unusable as it happens almost once a day. PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!

Not sure what the Apple TV freezing has to do with the receiver (the receiver works just fine). Others have also reported this issue. If Apple TV has a HDMI port, it should work with HDMI receivers without freezing.

On top of that, Onkyo receivers are some of the most popular HDMI receivers around. My TiVos, DVD players, and game boxes don't freeze when connected to them.

Come on Apple... this has been going on for a while now.

As I indicated I may be wrong, but the principle is the same as plugging a faulty camera or other device into your PC and it causing the PC to crash.

All I'm saying is you might want to try the direct connection to the tv, before pushing too many strongly worded criticisms onto the tv.

If it isn't an Apple problem, I'd like the official word. I'm running the Apple TV HDMI into a Denon-4306 from Denon into Samsung plasma via HDMI. I can listen to 20-30 minutes worth of music and then the Gray Apple Screen of Death Pops up. It is very frustrating and annoying. I had similar issues when trying to play a rental movie and had the HDCP issues, that worked out somehow. I run my cable box and PS3 into the Denon via HDMI and never have issues. This is an Apple TV problem that needs to be fixed.

Well, like it or not, this is pretty likely some kind of HDMI issue - there are lots of devices out there that don't exactly conform to the standard. Add to this that some devices use HDCP, and only some support the full bi-directional communications protocols (Onkyo calls this RIHD), and lots of devices have lock-up problems.

Popular receivers or not - google 'Onkyo HDMI problem' or go to the AVS forums.

Sorry, this is an Apple bug. It happens weekly on BOTH of my apple TVs which are both using HDMI to different TVs by different manufacturers. I finally got sick of this and downgraded both to the old firmware version and set them to streaming only so I wouln't have to reboot them every time I wanted to watch or listen to anything (since I typically go several days between sessions).

Almost as bad as the HDMI interface bug that causes the whole system to freeze, the new firmware adds many more steps that I have to take before browsing my own library -- basically requiring me to scroll down past all the many ways I can browse the Apple store (not even Microsoft is this blatent in the Media Center interface). The old interface is much more straightforward to get to content already in my library.

I have the SAME exact problem. Freezes here and there...no obvious reason.
I have a Denon AVR-4308ci receiver and everything works fine...it has hdmi 1.3a on it. NO problems with any other device. I then plugged the Apple TV in to mY samsung lcd direct and sure enough....45-60 minutes later it froze.

I took HDMI out - after reading this thread - went component - and BANG...FROZE again in two hours this time.

I dont have much content on there to speak of..some pod casts, about 1gb of music...

I have the 160gb Apple TV with the latest SW.... Help Apple.... I doubt even an apple store would replace this...they wouldnt be able to find a fault.

I have the same issue. I have my AppleTV connected to a four port HDMI switch. I think it may have something to do when it is switching and doesn't see a res to sync to. I have been trying to switch to the AppleTV input before shutting off the set, which usually works until I forget...

Incidentally, the company that makes my four port switch (radiient) was one of the folks behind the HDMI standard, so I tend to agree with the perception this is a bug of some sort.

I rarely contribute to long threads, there is a tendency for threadjacking to occur, as is the case here (not criticising anyone for it, I understand people are anxious to solve there problem) where many additional posters have essentially different issues, the OP's issue becomes diluted and it becomes difficult to answer everyone.

However, I find it difficult to accept this is a bug in v2 software, there isn't any evidence to support that this is simply an  problem, indeed any evidence tends to suggest the opposite to me. What v2 appears to have done is introduced the ability through HDMI for your tv to wake your tv, it seems to me that this is not fully supported by a number of devices and the consequences are apparent for all.

I note a number of threads are critical of  here, which I think is quite unrealistic, don't get me wrong this isn't a blind fanboy response, I do believe  may need to look at overcoming such incompatibilities if they are to win over everyone to the tv, but as far as these incompatibilities being firmly a problem resulting from bugs in v2 software, I have serious doubts.
