Apple TV Freezes on Apple Logo with HDMI (i.e. stuck, crashes, hangs)

My Apple TV constantly crashes and freezes on the Apple logo. Only way to fix it is to unplug the unit and plug it back in. This is my second unit after going to the Apple store and getting another new one. I'm syncing to a PC running Vista & iTunes.

From what I understand, it's a HDMI problem (connected to Onkyo receiver via HDMI) and has been going on since the 2.0 upgrade (currently running 2.0.2).

It's now almost unusable as it happens almost once a day. PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!

The first time I had this happen, I went back and shut down any Symantec products or firewall (briefly) and all went fine. One other area to explore that IS tied to the receiver is the issue of HDCP. Bone up on it at: http://tv.about.com/od/hdtv/a/hdmidvihdcp.htm HDCP issues can cause a world of hurt in whether HDMI is functioning properly or not. I'm running through a Denon AVR 5805. Hope this helps.

Having the same problem here. Was happening before 2.0 but now even more frequently. It basically happens every time we try to use Apple TV. My wife is fed up because we got this to make it easier for her to listen to our music library through our stereo system. Now she can't work it...
Only thing that fixes it is to unplug and plug back in. We all know that is not the right thing to do.

For those that are saying this is not an Apple problem I have done the following:
-Plugged directly into my TV
-Changed HDMI cables
-Taken the Apple TV out of my stereo case so it does not get too hot
-Tested it on another older system in my house with HDMI

Always get the same result....

I've been having a similar problem with HDMI since 2.0. My issue is frequent blackouts where the screen just goes blank every few minutes making it nearly impossible to get a good movie experience.

I finally switched to the Component cables and the problem went away. I used the HDMI cable for my cable box instead and it worked fine.

Definitely a bug with the HDMI implementation.

With the switch to the component cables, finally after nearly a year it seems, I finally have a unit that works.

I am in the same boat , only HDMI device that locks up is my Apple TV. What is bad is I am really starting to purchase content from the store in the form of movies and tv shows so it needs to work right.

I am working with Applecare to get this resolved. I also have an onkyo sr-705 rcvr. My problem is it will work fine but after sleeping for a few days it will refuse to fully awaken. I am to the point now where I don't even get the logo and sounds while pressing the apple remote.

And while they are at it , go back to the ver 1 menus. I hate the new menu system.

This has to be an AppleTV bug somewhere with the HDMI

I've tried this with HDMI connected directly to a Sony TV, and through a Yamaha receiver, and I see the same results with either device. I will concede that not all devices conform to standards 100%, but if my HDMI cable box and TiVo can all work without crashing routinely, I don't see why my AppleTV can't as well.

I have seen both the Apple Logo bug (usually the Apple TV will reboot itself after a few minutes, but not always), and I've also seen a blank black screen - changing the input on my receiver over to something else (cable box or DVD player) and back over to the AppleTV will reset the black screen bug.

This did happen a lot more often pre-2.0 (it would require me to pull the plug every time back then), so it has got better with the new 2.0 software, but it still exists. I don't see it once a day any longer, the black screen I see once a week or so, and the Apple Logo reset maybe every other week. It's still annoying.

I have the same problem and to boot, after a few months of this happening my HDMI port just burnt out an i had to get a new one. The same exact thing happens with this one now. This problem also existed on the old SW 1.0 and the new SW 2.0. The odd thing is that sometimes the ATV disssapears from iTunes and sometime it stays, allowing me to sync to the harddrive of the ATV and everything, all while spitting out the apple logo crash screen.

**APPLE! fix this or do a mass recall now! its been a really really long time. This product/idea is genius but it needs to work right!**

i am going to call apple's support line tomorrow to see if they are any help. i know my AppleTV is waiting with the crash screen as we speak and will be tomorrow when im on the phone.

*by the way, only solution i found was to restart, which is Hold DOWN + MENU for 5 seconds or so... then choose Restart. it ***** but its the only way.*

I do not use HDMI, but rather component cables directly to my LCD TV, and have the same problem. I have a first-generation 40G appleTV and it worked fine until software update 2.0. But then the freezing problem became much more frequent with the recent 2.02 update.

On top of it all, I am now getting a bit of snow in the iTunes-purchased video I watch on my Apple TV (no snow if I watch the same video on my MacBook). Video used to be spotless clean with version 1.1. I would happily restore factory settings but would lose the ability to rent movies.

I am a big apple fan, but in this case I can't say that I'm happy. Please help Apple!

I think that I've found a solution to this problem. A bit about my hardware: I have my appleTV connected through a gefen upscaling HDMI switch.

What has worked for me is to turn the appleTV "off" before switching away to another input. You can do this by holding the pause/play button for a few seconds then everything goes blank.

When you switch back to the appleTV you have to hit the pause/play again to wake it back up. This usually results in a couple seconds of wonkyness before my tv recognizes the resolution switch.

Same problem here. Connected via hdmi into an LG LCD TV. Precisely the issues are thus:

If the ATV has not been used for some hours turning on the TV to the HDMI input will result in wonkiness, usually including multiple inputs to the ATV even though I am not touching it, or a simple crash with the apple logo appearing.

If the ATV has been used but the TV is on say the television input then I switch to HDMI, the ATV simple won't appear, if I reboot either the ATV or the TV then it will appear.

either way I gets a crash a day and it ain't keeping the doctor at bay.

For focus if I use the ipod as a remote without turning on the TV music comes forth every time. The crash occurs when ATV tries to display video.
