Apple TV Freezes on Apple Logo with HDMI (i.e. stuck, crashes, hangs)

My Apple TV constantly crashes and freezes on the Apple logo. Only way to fix it is to unplug the unit and plug it back in. This is my second unit after going to the Apple store and getting another new one. I'm syncing to a PC running Vista & iTunes.

From what I understand, it's a HDMI problem (connected to Onkyo receiver via HDMI) and has been going on since the 2.0 upgrade (currently running 2.0.2).

It's now almost unusable as it happens almost once a day. PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!

At the risk of repeating myself about the issue of threadajcking, this simply highlights the problem, the person I was replying to distinctly pointed out this is occurring for them only after v2 was installed.

In your case, it would seem that the problem started before v2, which happens to be something that I don't particularly recall being raised on these forums previously and would indicate to me a fairly rare occurrence (i.e. a problem specific to you and not too many others, which logically points to an issue with your switch and not the tv).

To demonstrate the point I make, from 9 posters on this topic, 4 tell us this is definitely after v2, 2 don't mention when they noticed this, 1 poster supports my point of view. 1 has a completely different issue which occurs with component also and only you tell us this happened prior to v2.

i wish to join the voice of freezing atv!!

every other day frozen on the apple logo. As there is no off switch and the power plug is amongst many others on a power board the only practical way to fix it is to rip the power out of the back and stick it back in again...... not a healthy solution.

Going back to the old firmware will only make me throw it out the window..... as its inability to maintain a connection with the network was a worse problem.

This is not helping the dodgey download situation either... i can't spend money on itunes if I tried.... every rental takes weeks to download due to download errors.... this product has amazing potential.... if only it worked.

system:
atv
HDMI to onkyo amp
HDMI to JVC DILA
airport

Apple???? your product is broken and your customers are waiting....

I can't offer a solution, but can add my experience to yours, and hope it helps Apple help us.

The Apple TV is one of 3 HDMI devices connected directly to my Sony receiver. It is the only one that crashes and freezes. (The others are a PS3 and a DTV HDR.)

It did occasionally freeze on startup, before v2, but does so more frequently now: maybe 3 times out of 5. Unplugging, waiting and restarting works almost every time. (It's a little like living with Windows.)

At this level of failure, it's wearying, rather than infuriating, for me. I could try connecting it directly to the TV monitor and see if the problem re-occurs to isolate the culprit. But in the end, I want to listen to music, and watch movies in 5.1, and I'm not going to swap out the receiver. So I'd prefer it if the Apple TV could do what my other HDMI devices can do.

This is happening to me also.

AppleTV connected to Onkyo receiver via HDMI. But so is my Tivo HD and it works beautifully, you know, the way Apple products usually work.

I bought this primarily to listen to music and watch HD rentals. Now every time I do either, I have to reboot the device because invariably it is stuck on the Apple logo. Why can't it just stay the way I left it?

This problem reared it's ugly head for me with 2.0 but now seems to be even worse with 2.02.

It happens much more consistently now when changing the TV to the ATV HDMI input and now also happens when I switch the TV's HDMI input FROM the ATV to another HDMI source. I know this happens because the audio from the ATV ceases when I switch the TV's HDMI video source to another. I switch the TV back to the ATV and have that stunning Black & White Apple logo.

I guess it is time to revert back to 1.1. Bummer...

I've been having the same exact problem. My atv is consistently (daily basis) crashing and freezing up on the Apple logo. The fix is always a system reset or a unplugging and plugging back in.

I've also noticed the atv is always very hot to the touch. I purchased this unit new in February, with 2.0 already loaded on it. My HDMI is connected to Samsung DLP through a Sony receiver.

After owning a number of high quality Apple products, this item is a major disappointment. This unit is going back to the Apple Store this week.
