making DVD readable on every device...

Hello,

I encounter a problem and a friend or mine told me yesterday he got the same problem so i'm asking the generous knowledgeable people here 🙂

When making a video editing in FCP I then export via quicktime and keep my video in the format it has been created (eg.DV) then in DVD studio pro I import the files and create my DVD. I try it and it works fine but when I give it to the person who asked me the job he/she can't read the bloody DVD!!! the menu appears but nothing respond.

so before I go further did I miss something?!

I tried many different things like getting into those ticks in the window for options, changing the menu and nothing!

this help would make me a big favour as this is for paid work..

cheers

Ok back to u all!

I got two friends who told me what they do and what works fine :

export your FCP project onto DV is it's from a DVD source, then once it has been exported open Compressor and import the project, choose and mpg2 codec and then compress. Once its done import it in DVDSP!!! then make your project and the dvd should be readable and user friendly!

obviously DVDSP doesn't compress the files right which leads to those reading problems.

thanks to u all !!!

While wandering around about fonts I read this thread. What hardware/operating system/version of DVDSP are you working on this project? I see you have a collection of hardware that is 4+years old in the hardware cycle

DVDSP4/10.3 with something greater than 867MhZ will work but slowly(this was my first machine/DVDSP setup.

What you may be experiencing is a lack of sufficient horsepower to encode. You can author and simulate but moving the working files into the DVD spec is hardware intense.

Depending on when the DVD player (or computer) you are using to play back those DVD was manufactured, DVD-Rs may NOT be readable; DVD-RW are worse. I had a first generation Sony high-end player which had trouble with SOME DVD-R, all DVD-RW, and then evenually, many commercial DVDs. It was not upgradeable.

Most newer players read everything with problem, but there is still the issue of the quality of the DVD-R itself. I've found that Taiyo Yuden 8x or 16x (depending on your burner) writting at 4x via Toast or Describe (packaged with some automated burners) seem to provide as close to 100% compatibility on 2nd generation players as I've seen.

Why 4x? It just seems to work better, and given the way 8x or 16x is actually written (starts out slow, then speeds up in two or three steps), the performance is not that much worse for partially filled DVDs.

Here's my 2 cents worth!

First off, I always encode the video outside of DVD SP, (BitVice or Compressor.)

The audio is also encode to AC3, (never use AIFF audio on a DVD.)

Being that my burners came with my MacPro, I always burn out of DVD SP.

I've use several different types of media over the years, but anymore, I only use Taiyo Yuden, very rarely burn a coster. The benefit of using Taiyo Yuden over many other kinds of media is, not having DVDs returned, due to the DVD player couldn't play it, (close to 100 percent compatibility with most DVD players.)

I create about 200 projects a year and never have problems with them being compatible for clients.

ok Michael, I'm glad to see people are giving their experiences on that thread although I made it solved. I have two configurations ; my home G4 dual 450mhz upgraded to dual 1.8GHZ working on 10.3.9 with DVDSP4 on the other hand at work G4 dual 1.25 ghz with 10.4 and DVDSP3.

I believe u that the workflow is a bit slower, but on burning dvds I have an external Lacie firewire 400 at home and it works pretty good.At work the internal pioneer sold with the MAc, my real problem in slow working is with FCP which I leave a thread on the right place.

mr kelly that confirms what people told me and I will do in my next projects. as for AC3 I still don't get it but I've been told u can change the bitrate of the dvd to make it work for everybody in the compressor's preferences.
I thank u for those information and although I'm greatfull to have such responses with many experiences and advice after I marked it solved.

thank u all !

well for the DVDs I tend to use Verbatim I tried Traxdata...long time ago and now I get another trade that is cheaper but at the end in my job we always have people who can't read the DVD we give cos by experience none devices are the same! some work in a PC some in a home cinema etc... I'll check those u're talking about though.

but now it's gonna be much complicated with the new blue ray format cos not everybody is able to have that equipment and it probably will bring more problems reading DVDs into the computer and DVD home players.

we just have to deal with it.
but it's a pain.

thanks
