iMac G5's screen is completely black, but it seems like it works perfectly.

Hello, I really need some help with the problem and I would like a fix that would be free or really cheap and doesn't involve going to the Apple Store. It started when my computer froze and I had to hold down the power button to shutdown. After I shutdown and then restarted, the computer LCD screen won't turn on and the computer still makes sounds like adjusting the volume from the keyboard. Please, can someone help me with this major problem, all my music and videos and photos are on this computer and I don't have a new backup.

Yes you are! Hopefully, your problem will now be resolved. Make sure you keep your receipt & a record of your case# as the warranty on those type of repairs is 90 days.

@alexcb: Just interested to know if they did say it was under the repair extension program? And I am guessing you're computer was already out of warranty when this happened?

I seem to having the same problem and when they looked at it at my local apple store they told me it'll cost $700 and did not even mention the repair program. So I'm just wondering if this program is still available as my serial # actually falls within the range eligible for the repair.

Well, that actually didn't say that my own iMac G5 was under repair extension program. They just saw the problem, knew it was a iMac G5 and said they would fix it no cost. I really think that I was really lucky about the whole situation. But if your serial # actually falls within the range eligible for the repair they will fix it, print out this link (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2390) and show it to them if they don't.

Hello Alexcb & Jeff Junatas,

Thought I'd add my experience to this thread, as we just came back from dropping off my 1'st gen iMac 1.6 (single cpu) at a Apple store, where I had taken in twice previous for problems... I did bring the Extend Warranty letter, documentation on all of the sad history, and the Genius just nodded sadly and said it was too late for the warranty; But that after hooking up to his laptop and running some diagnostic program, pronounced the Logic Board as bad and that he would take care of it at no charge.

So, left with my iMac empty box and a receipt showing $ 0 due, and they would call me when it was ready.

I don't know what they replaced on my two previous trips before so don't know if it was another Logic board then. And I didn't see any point in discussing the Extended since he said it was expired, BUT was going to fix it at no cost.

I suspect that they are told not to "extend" the warranty on the 1'st gen's; but then replace it at no cost for customer good will. That way, it makes us feel like they are going out of their way to help, just for this one time.

In any case, I'm pleased not to have to pay for a new Logic Board, so no reason really to pursue this any further. Now I just hope this one is stable.

Good luck, and do post back and let us all know if you have success.

Respectfully,
B. Gallagher

Ok this really ***** then. I just came home from my local Apple Store trying to get my iMac fixed under said program and they said the same thing that it is too late for it even after an AppleCare representative told me that my computer is eligible for it. They briefly looked inside but didn't offer to run any diagnostics.

I did have problems with it before and they apparently replaced the logic board thus actually making me ineligible for the program even if I had brought it in prior to the cut off date. I just wish your Apple Store's goodwill extended to the ones down here 😟

Thanks,
Jeff
