Keyboard/Mousepad Freezes

My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?

I've had the same issue for almost 3/4 months and when I went to the apple store they replaced the logic board. Once they replaced the logic board it didn't seem to happen as often but sure enough its still broken. For reassurance I reinstalled the OS with no imported settings from previous install or any previously installed programs and it's STILL reoccurring. This is hard to recreate because its random and I constantly have to close the lid because after I wake it up from hibernation its services are restored(not for long either). I'm struggling to type this message as this is happening.....

FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feb 14, 2009 10:59 AM in response to georose

I went to the apple store again and I had showed the tech this forum. After some digging he said that engineering is aware of this issue and that he escalated this problem. There was no estimated time for when this would be fixed but hopefully soon. I did have him downgrade me to 10.5.4 in the hopes that this will get rid of these issues and so far it has. I do notice some flakiness of the keyboard but this is the longest I've gone without my trackpad/keyboard freezing up on me or see the error messages. So for those with this problem and are willing to do the same, this is your temporary solution.

I've had this problem since December. It's gone away and come back. It was working fine this past month until last night when the trackpad and keyboard froze. In the past I've taken out the battery and just rebooted on the power cord but even that doesn't work anymore. I thought it might have to do with the orange ribbon but nothing I do works. It's been frozen for 12 hours now and refuses to come back.

I can't take my computer in for another 3 weeks which stinks. But it looks like Apple can't even fix the problem after people have sent it in. I'm definitely annoyed that I have to plug in an external mouse/keyboard until the keyboard and trackpad decide they want to come back from their extended vacation...

How long was the longest time anyone's had it frozen before it came back?

3 weeks without a freeze then I get a weird one. The keyboard freezes but not the trackpad. Usually closing the lid and reopening a minute later allows me to do a restart but not this time. After closing and reopening the lid several times with no response, the final reopen unfroze the trackpad only but no keyboard. Since it requires a password which I obviously couldn't enter without keyboard response, a hard restart was required.
I wonder if Apple is working on this (probably not) and how prevalent this is. These posts are not a good representation since there are millions of MacBook Pros. Only Apple could know for sure.

I highly recommend those that have this issue take it in and get it fixed.

I had mine fixed yesterday, since they were backed up it only took them a few hours (though other places may vary of course, especially if they have the part or not).

This is the best thing you can do to fix the issue and hope to never see again because from what I have found out, you may see it again someday but also, you may never.

An Apple Genius should easily know about the problem if you tell them that this is the issue you are having. What do you need? A new top case.

Got my MBP back from repair with new logic board, new top case (=touchpad, keyboard) and new LED TFT. This should have fixed the touchpad and keyboard freeze.
It took several days to repair. They told me that the first top case replacement showed the same problems and they needed to order another top case…

If this is true, it sounds like a serious problem with the top case.

The first days after the repair are free from any problems in the syslog. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it’s away for ever…

I highly recommend everyone with this issue to talk to apple care and let arrange a top case replacement! I have tried many other things to fix it but only the repair has shown a longer lasting solution so far. So I have a strong believe that many top cases have a serious problem! If you have one of those let it replace soon! Especially if you still have guarantee.

Apple did not charge me for the repair (guarantee). But the authorized service provider in my local area wanted to have 90 EUROs just for dismounting the HDD while the MBP was repaired. I didn't liked the idea of letting me HDD in their store for several days... So I learned form this: My next Mac will have a user replaceable HDD and battery...

Here is a follow up on this issue for me.

Apple replaced my topcase (keyboard & trackpad). Now all of the major components have been replaced - the screen, logic board and top case, and the OS has been re-installed. After the top case replacement, the keyboard & trackpad became unresponsive following a few hours of use. I could plug in a USB mouse & keyboard and they worked fine. I checked the logs, and there were no "AppleUSBMultitouchDriver" messages this time. I had to reboot to regain the trackpad & built-in keyboard functionality.

It has been about two weeks since the repair, and this has happened twice. I usually use the computer with an external mouse & keyboard though. Rebooting alleviated the issue each time, but this is unacceptable. As of yet, there has not been a reocurrence of the "AppleUSBMultitouchDriver" errors in the system.log.

My guess is that there is a fundamental design flaw in this model (part #: Z0EZ0008S, model #: A1260). Perhaps it is a heat issue. Eventually something will break and the AppleUSBMultitouchDriver messages will return to accompany the keyboard/trackpad lock-ups. I still have 2 years of warranty coverage, so I will be returning this laptop to the Apple Store when the lock-up happens again. They have had it for about 30 days out of the past 90, awaiting parts. It's a 2 hour drive to the Apple Store, each way -- this issue has been a major waste of my time. And theirs. I'm going to request a replacement with a different (2009) model.

Feb 22, 2009 11:19 AM in response to Brentk

That *****. Let us know if they agree to replace your system. I agree the biggest concern I have is that I can't use this system for work because I had it lock up once during a presentation. AND it's impossible to sell it and replace it when you know it has such a major design flaw.

My wife has the Late 2008 model of the MacBook Pro and it has never had this problem so clearly Apple fixed it without realizing (or perhaps admitting) that it existed.

Now I have to send my computer in to have the Logic Board replaced. Next they will tell me to reinstall all of my software, and then MAYBE they will agree to replace it.

If Apple refused to give you a newer model perhaps you can offer to pay the difference? As some sort of trade in?

Five days ago I was ready to trash my MPB because of the freezes. After reading many posts on the subject I tried putting a piece of plastic between the battery and the exposed cables in the battery compartment. I used a credit card sized laminating pouch which fit perfectly. Two days went by with no problems.

As a test I took out the plastic, worked for about 15 minutes and experienced the freezes again. The plastic went back in and to be more certain, I lined the back of the battery itself with good electrical tape, overlapping as I went to give a double thickness.

Other than that little test period, I have not experienced the freezes since adding the plastic layer. In fact, I have been working steadily on a project for the past 24+ hours without shutting down or rebooting my system. YAY!!

Thank you to all who tested, tried and found this solution - it as fast & cheap and works for me.

I hope it solves the problem for others as well.
