Keyboard/Mousepad Freezes

My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?

Macbook Pro 15, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I have the same problem. If it freezes, it can:

- Use my bluetooth mouse and the Keyboard Viewer to continue operating long enough to save my data and reboot.
- Do a "Share Screen" from another Mac.
- Close the lid, let the computer go to sleep and then waking it back up.

When using any of these methods, the computer continues to work fine, I just can't use the trackpad or keyboard. If I sleep the computer and wake it up, the problem goes away for a while, but eventually the incidents become more and more frequent until I have to reboot.

I've had the same problem. This is definitely a software issue. It never happens to the MBP when running windows XP. I'm not sure what the cause is, but on mine it might be related to my Logitech mouse.

I haven't been able to find a fix for it, other than just rebooting and hoping for the best. I don't like hoping when it comes to computers, though.

Same problem here. My Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad stopping responding randomly on a few different occasions very recently. Plugging in the USB Apple Mighty Mouse gave me control of the cursor again, but the keyboard/touchpad remained frozen.

Closing the lid to put it to sleep and reopening it seemed to fix the problem.

A side note: in "System Preferences" / "Keyboard and Mouse" / "Trackpad", the multitouch gesture demo video clips didn't display since day one, and accessing that "Trackpad" tab would make the text garbled, even after switching between tabs within "Keyboard and Mouse". I would have to exit "System Preferences" to reset it.

But when the keyboard/trackpad froze, and after I had plugged in a USB mouse to control the cursor, I noticed that the videos were working in System Preferences. Could this have anything to do with it?

I'm running OS X 10.5.5 on the early 2008 model of the Macbook Pro. This never happened before 10.5.5, though I can't say for sure whether it has anything to do with it.

Has anyone else noticed this? When the keyboard freezes, you hit a few keys to verify that it's frozen. Then you shut the lid, let the computer go to sleep and wake it back up again. When it wakes up, the keys you pressed after the freeze show up in whatever you were typing. It's as though the buffer still works, but something downstream from there is broken. Watch for it the next time yours freezes.

Same problem here! When I close the lid and open it up again, the keyboard and touchpad do work again. But only as long as I use them frequently. When I let keyboard and touchpad alone for a while (one minute or so) both are frozen again.

When this bug is there, I can repeat the sleep and awake method with the same result again and again. Nothing in the logs.

When touchpad and keyboard are frozen, I can still use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Only a restart (reboot) will help me out.

I think it was not there before 10.5.5.
I have no idea what causes the problem.
I'm using VMware Fusion. Perhaps this might be a problem when running it was a WinXP VM. (when running debian in a VM it seems to be stable).

This is AGAIN a big bug from Apple software (this seems to be no hardware bug).
I also suffer LED backlid bug (stripes from time to time).
I also suffer NVidia Softwarebug. (Graphic intense apps lead to crash. Especially when running with extern display on DVI).

Seriously disappointed now! (My old G4 powerbook was more stable).

Apple has tons of dollars at the bank. I suggest to spend some money into keeping quality high! Since the iPhone is out, so many feel it's going the wrong way with computers (let alone the missing option for mate displays).

Thanks Apple for listening and fixen these big problems.
(Steve, do a quick research for Apple freezing keyboards and touchpads - it's huge...)

I have nothing new to add to this except to say that my March 2008 vintage MacBook Pro has the same keyboard/trackpad freezes. It does it at very unpredictable times. I can go a few weeks with no problems then it starts freezing again for several days.
I thought that it was my use of a Time Machine for backup that caused it. I began to notice a pattern, every time it froze Time Machine was running a backup. But since Time machine runs every hour when on power it may be a coincidence.
The lid closing does allow saving any work in progress but a restart or two or three is necessary to postpone the problem from recurring.
Also, my wife's white MacBook never has the problem.
Agreed that Apple needs to get on this problem soon.

Same problem here. exactly the same issue, and mi Macbook pro (early 2008 model) is just two months old.
Something that also accurs to me that i havent read in the topics is that the mousepad sometimes doesnt function properly, the cursor doesnt move as it should.
Anyone with th same prblem?

I´m very dissapointed with this, hope Apple fixes this soon.

hi,
same problem here.. does anyone have a more permanent solution for this seriously annoying problem?
But thanks for the temp solution atleast i'm not powering down now.
BTW i read somewhere that apple does not check the forums and the problem has to be sent to them. Does anyone know where to post this so that apple support and company staff see this problem and work to quickly solve it.
Cheers.
