Seeking a CRT, 1024/768 Monitor...

I have an aging 9 yr. old Sony Trinitron 17 inch which works great on my new MacMini; however the monitor needs to be replaced due to white dimming and contrast is slipping so letters are not as crisp. I have tried twice to get new monitors but they have distortion problems unable to give a true squared off display like the Sony. Yes, I used all the OSD settings to wrestle the monitor into shape, so to speak. But they also show inconsistent white color across the display.
I am now in process of getting replacements from the Viewsonic and Lenovo. Hopefully they will work better. I really need a monitor that is accurate for color and shape and bright. I am tried of spending funds and returns. Please, I need to know why the Sony works right and the others wont. I am a legally blind guy (hence the low res) who enjoys doing graphic design so a correct monitor is important. I love my MacMini, now it just needs a good display. Help!

The terms of use prevent users from posting personally identifiable details such as email addresses, hence the moderator edit in your last post. Apple Discussions was not really set up for direct user-to-user communication (it's intended precisely as a public discussion forum) so there is no PM feature. Unfortunately the OP in this thread did not make a contact email address public (this can be done in the user's Public Profile) so there is no obvious way to make contact.

If he does edit his profile to make his email address public, you'll then be able to email him.

Thanks for all for helping me (some behind the screen). A solution is in progress/process now. Will keep posted. It seems this summer many CRT OEMs are finally discontinuing selling and/or making CRTs, but will provide support. By late fall am told, only recycle or used computer places would carry CRTs.

I just hope the MacMini product remains for a long time. Being forced to use an LCD is not something I want with a new Mac. Apple, please remember choice/options is an important value for a computer, but within an affordable range. I really don't want my MacMini be my last Mac.

Ok, I got the KDS monitor. Wow, very cool. A big thank you!! What a paradigm shift for my eyes. But worth the effort to get used to it after all the tweaking needed is done. But boy would resolution independence be nice at this time 😉

A few notes. It seems Safari 3.1.1 is unable to set the font size of its own gui. Many other of Apple's bread&butter apps for OS X do. Any one recommend a browser thats more visually impaired friendly. Yes, I know I can change the font size for web pages etc...and have done so. But Safari's bookmarks bar and books browser is unable to allow setting its font size (ie Apple Mail does). Is there a formal Safari forum I can post my problem?

Thanks.

It's good that you like the new display - I've been wondering how you were getting along!

As for Safari, you're right there's no obvious way to adjust the size of text in the interface rather than the displayed web page, though I'm not an expert, so there may be something in there, somewhere. Try posting in the Safari discussion area at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=876, explaining you need this due to severe sight impairment (otherwise you'll get a lot of people who'll want to tell you that 'it looks OK to them!)

For displaying web pages in more viewable sizes, the new Firefox 3 is the best.

It allows you set different magnification for every website, and it remembers them. All you have to do is CMD-plus or CMD-minus until the screen looks right. When you revisit that website, it remembers those settings.

I don't think I've seen any browser that lets you change the size of the GUI in any major way.

One way around this would be to create your own "portal" website, with correct magnification (thanks to FireFox3), and use it instead of the browser's gui for most tasks.

It is done for the monitor part, just some lose ends that can be managed. Sent back the other 17 inch monitors and getting refunds that will go to my Apple care funds.
Made my black light box frame and painted the front black tonight. Ready to rock and roll.... This forum experience reminds me of the early Mac days at user groups. We helped each other get the most out of our Mac tools. Thank you all. 🙂 Now moving on to those lose ends...

I'm not sure that the ability to adjust text sizes in websites is exactly what's needed here, since the problem is with the size of the text in the interface itself. Firefox is certainly better in the options to resize content on a site by site basis, where Safari seems only able to do this generically. Neither, as far as I can see, allow the user to change the size of text for such things as bookmarks in the toolbar, in the address line or the status bar etc., which I think is more what the OP is looking for.

Since I have vision issues (though different from the OP's) I've always disliked the small gui text in every browser I've encountered.

I've never seen one where this could be significantly changed.

Hence my suggestion that the OP create his own "portal" homepage, where at least he could control the size of the links. And using Firefox 3, any search service he used could be easy to read.

The goal of the personal "portal" is to basically replace the gui.

Firefox 3 is way ahead of Safari, in controlling both text and content size, which is done on a site by site basis.

BTW a google search for "personal portal" reveals lots of ways to go about this.
