iTunes 7.7 does not install "Apple Mobile Device Support" software (Vista)

The itunes 7.7 install completes without an error message, but when I run and plug in my iphone, it says software is missing. When I uninstall and try again I noticed that the "Apple Mobile Device Support" installation seems to roll back.

Have tried a number of uninstall/reinstall/reboot cycles but have not been able to get past this.

Help! How can I fix this....

When I pull the sync cable out, iTunes seems to recognize my iPod Touch. But it won't sync. Again: Aaaaaaaggghh!

That also came up on my screen BUT you just have to close it or click OK and keep your ipod touch connected and it will automatically sync.

People try restoring to before you installed iTunes 7.7. Then update it.

My system restore won't work properly - have tried a variety of restore points unsuccessfully. Found the suggestion to run the itunes.exe as an administrator on another thread and this seems to sort it out. Don't know if it will cause any problems down the line. Any official response from Apple yet?
p.s. I don't have an iphone if I disable mobile device support will my ipod still sync?

I was suffering from this same problem. I had iTunes 7.6 installed on my Vista Business x64 machine and when I tried to install 7.7, the installer would stop working near the very end of the installation process, and the Mobile Device Service would not get updated. I also had my UAC disabled.

The solution that worked for me was to simply turn UAC back on, reboot and reinstall iTunes 7.7. Syncing my iPhone 3G as I type this.

Apple Mobile Device Support installation rolls back. Been fighting this for a month. So far, no word or fix from Apple supportafter hours on the phone. iTunes, Quicktime, and other install features install fine. Without Apple Mobile Device Support my iphone software can not be upgraded 😟
Still looking for a fix...tried everything posted on all the support and discussion websites.
