hey i figured out what was wrong
the cd's are not in correct format due to copyright issues etc. so my friend said to download this FreeRip MP3 program to convert them to mp3's http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download.asp?fid=16726&fileidx=1
it works! from there just copy them into itunes and its all good! just run a spyware detection program just in case if there is anything.

Did anyone find out how to solve this. My mini 6gb was great until I launched the update 4.9. Now I am having the same problem as others listed here.
I have restored, updated Windows, got advice on the iPod mini site and still having the same problem. The local Apple store(Leeds) say it is not a fault with the iPod, but with iTunes so it is not going to be resolved under warranty.
Please can someone advise how to fix this.
Thanks

Jamie (and anyone else that wants help)

I need more information about your hardware configuration. If you haven't already, go get iTunes 4.9 and install it. Run the iTunes Help menu -> Run CD Diagnostics... command and post the results here.

Also tell me what the model / manufacturer of your computer is or if it's a custom built machine. If it is a custom machine, what is the model / manufacturer of your motherboard?

All I know about this computer is that it was custom made.

This is what my CD Diagnostics says:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
iTunes 4.9.0.17
CD Driver 2.0.4.3
CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.1
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3),
Video Driver: S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR S3 Compatible Display Adapter

IDE\CdRomOPTORITE CD-RW_CW5201___________________210E___, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [0,0]
If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some Dell computers need an update to the ATA bus driver before iTunes recognizes CDs. If you have a Dell computer, check the Dell support website for details.

The CD diagnostics don't show any errors reading the CD, so it's odd that you're only getting the first 15 seconds.

There is new firmware for that drive on the Optorite support page. Search down the page for "CW5201". You're running firmware version 210E and there's a new version 220E.

You could try that. As far as the type of motherboard, if you click the start menu and select "Run" and type in "msconfig32" and click OK, a dialog box comes up with information about your system. Does it say anything interesting in the "manufacturer / model" fields?

I am having this same problem with brand new ipod mini. I have never been so frustrated. We downloaded 4.9 (as suggested by apple help desk) and we were able to import one cd. But, now I'm having the same problem with every other cd I try...and I only get 3-5 seconds per song. I have spent about 10 hours on this and I'm ready to chuck the whole thing! Please HELP!!!!

Actually I'm going to elucidate further on my previous post. I don't get 15 seconds, iTunes doesn't import a single second of any song. With the CD in the drive and all songs selected, when you push Import the little green check marks appear at a rate of about one per second. In 10 or 12 seconds iTunes "thinks" all the songs have been imported. In my Library the songs I've just tried to import show up, but in the Time column there is "Not Available" indicated. As well, iTunes won't play when I double click on them -- iTunes simply examines each song, doesn't play a second of music, then proceeds to the next album and starts to play it. This problem did not occur in the previous version of iTunes, so I'm thinking it is a software problem (nothing else has changed on my computer). Is it possible Apple has decided to not allow people to rip from their own CDs due to intellectual property concerns (have to buy from iTunes Music Store or rip using third party software??

I am having the exact same problem - and yes, it began just after downloading the newest version of i-tunes. It is very frustrating! I am wondering if this problem has been solved as I cannot receive phone assistance without being charged for it at this point. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem posted on the Apple troubleshooting site? Or can someone post the solution here in this discussion page?
