Here is an article that may help Catherine or anyone else that was able to burn just ONE disc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93647

I suspect itunes 4.9 has introduced new code that requires up to date drivers for some burners. Here is an article that may help you update your drivers for your cd burner:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300252

Note that in step 3 of this document, you are looking for the device type: DVD/CD-ROM drivers in the list of devices.

Again, if you have been spending hours trying to fix this, don't overlook trying to burn from your OTHER drive if you have one. Maybe your other cd or dvd drive doesn't need newer drivers and will work fine in version 4.9

OK this is driving me crazy....I've been on the phone twice now with the "apple support" people and they have no idea what I am talking about....at least I am not the only one. I put in any audio CD and it plays 3 seconds....and then I import into the library and it is 3 seconds. There is no one that can help I don't get it....it's not a copyright issue cause I use all cd's- burned, purchased, friends' bands...no audio cd works. However the 1st apple guy told me the problem was my updater-which is not true-I've got 4.9 Itunes and 6-26-05 Ipod update. The 2nd apple person told me it was that I had musicmatch on my PC as well as Itunes and they were conflicting....C'mon. She then said she would email me how to remove Musicmatch. I don't understand-this is ridiculous that Itunes 4.9 is a wreck. Hopefully someone will help -I thought it was a setting I had to preview songs or a limited play...I don't know- clueless....and so is apple.

I'm such a doofus! In my post above, I said 'burn' when I should have said 'import.' Please disregard my post above and read this one in its place - hope I didn't cause too much confusion.

I've also had this problem. I don't have full administrative capabilities on the computer I use, so I can't update my disc drive. I gave up and just imported them with a different music player, and then imported them from there. This is definitely the most annoying of the many problems I've with iTunes 4.9. I'm the only one in the family who has this problem, too.

Mark,

Yes, it's software related. It's usually a conflict between some of the drivers in your system or a problem with older firmware.

I need more information about your hardware configuration. If you haven't already, go get iTunes 4.9 and install it. Run the iTunes Help menu -> Run CD Diagnostics... command and post the results here.

Also tell me what the model / manufacturer of your computer is or if it's a custom built machine. If it is a custom machine, what is the model / manufacturer of your motherboard?

Erin,

This problem should have been fixed with iTunes 4.9. If you're still having this problem with the newest software, I need more information about your hardware configuration. If you haven't already, go get iTunes 4.9 and install it. Run the iTunes Help menu -> Run CD Diagnostics... command and post the results here.

toonz...

A co-worker of mine is having a similar problem....
There was a lot of distortion when they would play a CD straight from the DVD/CD drive. I unchecked the error correction and the fixed a lot of the distortion, there is still a little, but it is significantly improved at this point....

He is also having a problem with importing...

When we insert a CD and click to import, it does a pretty good job, except for a few songs in which it only imports part of them. For instance track 8 of the cd I ran the diagnostics with...It is a 3:45 track and it only imported 56 seconds. (sidebar: once a track is imported the distortion from the CD drive goes away, making the minor distortion not a huge problem at this point)

The computer is a Nobilis A2500H

I have tried to find a website or some drivers but can't, maybe you will have better luck....

Here are the diagnostics:

Gregory,

If it's only 1 track or 1 CD, make sure you clean the CD and make sure the CD is not copy protected.

Another thing that might be interesting to check out. On the ASUS support page. The bottom of the three things listed on this page is a utility from ASUS to see if you need to update the firmware on that drive. The thing called the "ASUS CDROM / CDRW / DVDROM / DVDRW Auto Update Utility V1.00".

You don't get any distortion when you play just songs from the hard drive? It's distortion when you play the CD and it's not there in the imported file? Hmmm. What importing speed are you getting?

Jul 13, 2005 9:38 PM in response to toonz

toonz...

Thanks for your help...I will look into those solutions, but here is what else I can tell you now...

It isn't just one track or one CD...The number of tracks that are messed up varies, but it does it to any CD he tries to import....

I'm not familiar with copy protected CDs...If that were the case, how is he to import it into iTunes...I'll go search somewhere and find that out...

I will definitely check out that ASUS support page and run that....

The import speed is approximately between 5-7x...I don't know the actual read speed of the drive, but that seems low...

Thanks again for your help....

I am having problems when I try import a CD

When I put a CD in the drive and click to import, itunes appears to import the CD a normal, however when I go back to play the songs I notice that on certain CDs itunes only imports parts of certain songs (about 30 to 50 secs on the song) and On other CDs itunes imports every other track on the CD. This began after I downloaded and updated itunes to vers. 4.9.

Hi Toonz and others who have offered help to date.

I have run the iTunes Help menu. Diagnostics attached below. NB "Audio CD reading failed"

I have an AMD Athlon XP2400+ CPU
The motherboard is a K7 Triton GA-7VKMP via KM266 Chipset.

I have also attempted to obtain latest updates for the CD Drive without success. I have an MSI CD-R/RW Drive and an Atapi CD-RW 52X max device.

Any further advice would be of great help.
