After having spent one week on this issue, I finally checked the postings to see that there are many others going nuts over the same problem I am having...What a joke that there is nothing on the iTunes Support site that even acknowledges this problem exists....

I am having the same problem as all other postings on this site except that I am one of those guys who doesn't know jack about computers. My system info is:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
iTunes 4.9.0.17
CD Driver 2.0.4.3
CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.1
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3),
Video Driver: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 GeForce2 MX/MX 400
Check the website of your computer manufacturer or video card vendor to verify that you have the latest video drivers.

Some Dell computers need an update to the ATA bus driver before iTunes recognizes CDs. If you have a Dell computer, check the Dell support website for details.

hi Joseph!

... this isn't a short term solution at all, and apologies if you've already done this.

try heading to this page:

http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/

check to make sure you've done everything relevant listed in the articles cited at the top of the page. And if you get no joy from those suggestions, go down to the bottom of your page and submit your CD diagnostics to Apple.

if you've got the time, it's also worth going to your PC and Drive manufacturers' websites to check to see if they've got any troubleshooting information on the problem. (and if they've got feedback areas, telling them your problem probably can't hurt.)

sorry again, clearly not a fix in the short term for your problem.

I had the same problem as everyone here and solved it by uninstalling version 4.9 and re-installing 4.7 off of the cd that came with the ipod. This now allows me to download an entire cd....ONE PROBLEM:Now, I am getting a message that I now have two libraries and would I like to replace the music on my ipod with the music from the new library (that is empty). Anyone know how I can restore or copy my old library to my new one?

Having read the posts on this thread this is clearly a widespread problem. A number of writers have set out their CD diagnostic results but have any of you actually had a response from Apple? I am new to iPod and so, while drawing some comfort from the fact that I am not alone, I am hugely frustrated because I cannot get past square one. Some of you have suggested using another media player to download tracks and then using iTunes to import onto the iPod, but as far as I can see this has made no difference. Am very open to suggestions as the iPod is actually my daughter's and I am a non-techno dad trying to sort things out for her.

After further discussion with Apple help line and my retailer it seems that the problem is likely to be incompatibility between iTunes and my CD-RW driver. Admittedly the PC is now 2+ years old so maybe I should not be surprised at that. As I could not find an update for the driver I tried putting an audio CD into the DVD and that seemed to work. iTunes was able to successfully import all the tracks. Not sure if that is problem solved or just put off until later, but my daughter's happy so I'll settle for that.

no additional help to you, i'm afraid ... just a request for a bit more information. what CD-RW drive and driver are you currently running? what make and model of computer do you have? (any information we can get on this sort of thing might "help" the next poor person with one of these hassles.)

Thanks for this. Although the DVD thing seems to be working, I would still like to see if I can get the CD RW going properly so I will check through the pages in the link to see if there is anything there that assists.

In response to your first question, the CD RW is an ATAPI CD RW Max52X and with what appears to be a generic Microsoft driver. ATAPI does not have a website and when I used the driver update facility in Windows it came up blank.

hi Steve!

hmmm. ATAPI isn't a manufacturer. it's the name of a device interface. See:

http://www.ata-atapi.com/#T2

... i don't have anything concrete in mind. but, just in case and if you've got time, can you do something for me? go into the burning preferences of your itunes. what is the name of the device listed up the top there? Here's a screenshot of what i see (for reference purposes):

http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1YneVC6pvwzDkjz5TRMMy3AgwouBh1

also go into your device manager. (right-click "my computer", select manage. click on device manager.) expand your DVD/CD-ROM drives entry.

what device is listed there? (here's another screenshot for reference purposes.)

hi Glen!

Glad you've got a workaround in place. if you've got the time, would you mind heading here:

http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/

and submitting your diagnostics on that other drive? At the moment, i've got no idea what to say to people who get that string of errors showing up in their diagnostics, so i figure the more that Apple knows about that one, the better.
