itunes freezes when I attempt to burn CD from playlist

When I try to burn a CD from a playlist, all goes well until I click on to the pulsating "Burn Disc" Icon. Then, itunes freezes. I cannot execute any function at that point other than to use Windows Task Manager to shut down itunes. I read the posts in this section and tried the remedy of installing the GEAR installer to remove gearsec.exe and GEARSEC security with GEARsoftware. Contrary to the instructions, the software never asked me if I wanted gearsec.exe removed. That didn't solve the problem. This is a new problem that I did not experience in the past as I have burned several CD's from itunes before. I am now using itunes version 4.9.0.17 with Windows XP (Home Edition) with SP2. I will appreciate any directions that you can give me to correct this problem. Below are the results of my CD Diagnostic Check that I ran through itunes:

hi Robert!

hmmmm. if you have been getting this problem since you updated to 4.9, it would be most prudent first to head to the Dell website and check for updates for your model of Dell for every component where an upgrade possibility is mentioned in those diagnostics (including the video card).

the upgrade to 4.9 might have outstripped the capacities of your current hardware/OS/driver configuration. here are some references that might be helpful:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300252

toonz, "Where to find firmware for your CD/DVD drive", 05:55pm Apr 15, 2005 CDT

also head to windows update to check to see if you're up to date in that regard too.

keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for your effort, B. Unfortunately, I am still stuck. I am up to date with Windows. I checked NEC and there are no new drivers. I'm actually not sure if version 4.9 is the cause of my problem since I hadn't attempted to burn a disc from my itunes music playlist for a while. Do you have any other suggestions? I may try reinstalling itunes v.4.9 to see if that helps unless you advise against it.
Thanks.

hi Robert!

hmmmm. we actually had some success earlier just this afternoon with something a little bit similar to this by doing a
b clean
uninstall prior to reinstalling. here's a link to the post in the thread where i explained my thinking (it also has a link through to the clean uninstall instructions):

b noir, "iTunes maxing out CPU/hanging when burning" #3, 03:06pm Sep 6, 2005 CDT

... this seems worth a shot. keep us posted.

Dear B:
I followed your instructions except for one .exe file that the OS would not allow me to delete. I downloaded a new copy of itunes and Quicktime from itunes.com, and installed it. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem that I reported. Where should I go from here? Could other software be interfering with this process? If so, what type of software would be most likely to do so? Please point me in a new direction. Thanks.
Robert

hi Robert!

I followed your instructions except for one .exe file that the OS would not allow me to delete.

hmmmmm. let's give this one more try. was it an itunes file or a quicktime file? you may not have been allowed to delete it if an itunes or quicktime process was still running, and that could well have interfered with the reinstall.

adapt Katrina's instructions here in order to stop any itunes or QT processes prior to the clean uninstall:

Katrina S., "itunes won't open on windows" #21, 01:15pm Sep 3, 2005 CDT

(though in your case you're doing this as preparation for an uninstall rather than an itunes relaunch.)

then once
b all
the files are gone, let's give the reinstall another shot.

Jul 2, 2016 3:50 PM in response to b noir

Hi again B,
The exe file that I couldn't delete was an itunes file, not quicktime. After I executed Katrina's instructions, I was able to delete that file. Unfortunately, the problem still exists! I notice that even when I extract all of the files that you instructed me to delete, the program names (ie. ipod updater, itunes, etc.) remain in the install/uninstall folder. This is after I've uninstalled them through the install/uninstall process and then pulled all of the other stuff out that the list recommended. When I run a search of files in the computer however, it shows NOTHING beginning with ipod or itunes. Curious, huh? I also performed the Task Manager steps that you recommended. After I realized that none of the above steps solved my problem, I tried burning a disk using Roxio Media Creator and mp3 files. The process was perfect. So I assume there is no hardware problem. In fact, I played back the songs from the disk with itunes! Itunes seems to be functioning well in all ways EXCEPT for burning CD’s . Where do I go from here? Yikes!!!! Thanks for all of your effort.

hi Robert!

I tried burning a disk using Roxio Media Creator and mp3 files. The process was perfect.

hmmmmm. which version of Roxio are you using? can you go into the "about" screen to give us a version number? do you have any other cd burning/ripping software installed? if so, what's the version number for that? (WMP counts ...)

we get odd incompatibilities with certain versions of Roxio and itunes (they like different registry filter settings) ... on the other hand, usually a symptom of the classic conflicts is that the CD drives disappear when you uninstall itunes ... here are some references:

Peter Adler1, "iTunes 4.9 hijacked my CD drive" #9, 01:26pm Aug 25, 2005

mousefan, "iTunes took control of my cd/dvd drives........." #4, 07:32pm Aug 31, 2005

there have been some funny effects also reported for Roxio 7.5, too. (the CD tray refusing to eject ...)

I am using Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. (version 7.1.1.189 to be precise). I have no other CD burning software but I do have an Iomega external hard drive connected USP2. The software that comes with that is Iomega Automatic Backup v3.2.
Your thoughts........

no, i can't find anything relevant to do with conflicts with those packages. I'm not sure it's worth trying to uninstall 7.1 just to see what happens. (given that it's actually
b working
at the moment.)

curses. okay, at this point in time, all i can suggest is to start wading through our sea of documentation on burning problems. i believe you've already seen some of this, so apologies in advance:

b noir, "error codes" #4, 08:56am Aug 25, 2005

and then it's into the holding pattern ... keep checking the links to Apple docs, because they get updated. keep refreshing the thread with a post every now and then, in case we've been able to accumulate some more relevant working wisdom on the forums.

sorry i couldn't be of more help.

B, I'v had Easy Media Creator since before I used earlier versions than 4,9 of itunes. Is it possible that itunes 4.7 worked fine with my current setup but 4.9 does not? This is just too wierd.... Is there a Senior Apple Tech who I can call that may come up with another angle on this? If so, who and where? Thanks.

Sep 7, 2005 3:19 PM in response to Community User

hi Robert!

I don't have evidence that suggests that at this stage for that particular version Robert, so i'm not suggesting we uninstall the Roxio. afraid with the sudden appearance of ITfW 5.0 this afternoon, i'm going to be busy with Installations and Upgrades for a while. i may not be able to get back to you on a regular basis.

As you see by my past postings, nothing I tried resolved the problem. I did however, get the problem resolved by downloading and installing itunes version 5. Go figure....

sorry for the delay in getting back to you ... actually I'm not entirely surprised. i noticed after we last spoke that the document on the "finishing burn" problem that used to take people to the GEAR drivers ... suddenly started pointing people to a 5 download. so this was presumably a 4.9 thing fixed in 5.

Yeah, that v4.9 was a real dog. It's unsettling to me that Apple would actually release that garbage. Fortunately, v5.0 seems fine.

hey this I my CD diagnostics and have iTunes version 5.1 and I was wondering, I am having the same problem and could you help me I tried to update both drivers and still the problem ensued.
