itunes freezes when I attempt to burn CD from playlist

When I try to burn a CD from a playlist, all goes well until I click on to the pulsating "Burn Disc" Icon. Then, itunes freezes. I cannot execute any function at that point other than to use Windows Task Manager to shut down itunes. I read the posts in this section and tried the remedy of installing the GEAR installer to remove gearsec.exe and GEARSEC security with GEARsoftware. Contrary to the instructions, the software never asked me if I wanted gearsec.exe removed. That didn't solve the problem. This is a new problem that I did not experience in the past as I have burned several CD's from itunes before. I am now using itunes version 4.9.0.17 with Windows XP (Home Edition) with SP2. I will appreciate any directions that you can give me to correct this problem. Below are the results of my CD Diagnostic Check that I ran through itunes:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
iTunes 4.9.0.17
CD Driver 2.0.4.3
CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2
LowerFilters: Cdr4_xp (7.1.0.190),
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3), Cdralw2k (7.1.0.189), pwd_2k (7.1.0.189),
Video Driver: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 GeForce FX 5200
Check the website of your computer manufacturer or video card vendor to verify that you have the latest video drivers.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some Dell computers need an update to the ATA bus driver before iTunes recognizes CDs. If you have a Dell computer, check the Dell support website for details.

The problem disappeared but only after I first went into ALL folders in my computer that had ANYTHING from itunes or Quick Time in them and deleted them. Simply uninstalling the programs from Windows uninstall will not complete the job. Then, I installed v. 5.0. I realize that you are having a problem even with v5.1 so one of two things may be happening.
1. itunes actually does burn a disc, but not immediately upon command (as it should). I can burn a disc, but the program still freezes up right after I click on the spinning wheel that says Burn CD. But after several minutes of sitting there frozen, the burning process begins on its own. It's quite weird and nobody's come up with an answer for it. But at least I get my burned disk.
2. If you have any other disk burning programs (ie. Roxio Easy Media Creator), I have heard that some versions don't interact well with itunes. You may need to remove other disc burning programs from your computer.
Good luck!

I am having the same problem. It started after downloading several songs last night (10/9). Today they wouldn't burn to CD. Thought it was a bad batch of CD's. Tried another package with same results. Previously worked.

Symtoms: CD Burns. Try to play with iTunes 4.7.x and the CPU usage spikes at 100%. Upgraded to iTunes 5.0.1 and the CD Burns. Playback is full of static. CD plays in some of my other stereo CD player.

Computer Environment: XP Home (updated) on a white box computer. Very little software installed - just MS-Office and a couple other applications.
