"Disc burner or software not found" error.

Basically despite the fact that my burner is listed under "advanced" preferences and I can burn using any other program, I get "Disc burner or software not found" error on my iTunes 5.

Any suggestions, I really want to solve this problem.
Thanks

Henryk's solution seems to be working for quite a lot of you guys (lucky you!). I've tried the suggested solution but I'm still not able to find my NEC ND-3540A in the edit/prefs/advanced/burn tab.

I inserted the line as shown below and when running CD diagnostics I get the following information:

IDE\DiskSAMSUNG HD080HJ________________________ZH100-33, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [1,0]
IDE\DiskSAMSUNG SP1614C________________________SW100-34, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [0,0]
IDE\CdRom NEC_DVD_RW_ND-3540A____________________1.01___, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [0,0]

(I've restarted the PC twice so all settings should have been updated)

Have I added my NEC DVD disc burner to the wrong "chapter". I can see there's quite a lot of different "chapters" where the disc burner can be added.

I hope someone can give me a hand here.

I had the same problem at first, but dont fear it can be fixed. Find the device manager in windows (right click My Computer, choose manage in xp or properties in ME or earlier.) Anyway, find the Device Manager> expand the CDROM item and it should list all available disc drives on your system. My NEC 3520A is actually named _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520AW. You may need to add name exactly as it appears, including that extra letter. I didnt need to restart the computer, just iTunes. I recomend inserting the name into every area of the file that mentions NEC just to cover all of your bases. When iTunes starts, open the adanced tab it might prompt you if you want to use a drive by the name XXXXX? That is 10:1 the NEC drive it just detected. Obviously you need to hit yes. Hope you can get it working! Good luck.

Thanks chemicalRXN but I still have the problem. When checking the Device Manager the disc burn is listed as: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A.
The driver version (5.1.2535.0) + date (01.07.2001) seems a bit old though. Don't know if this is important or not?

I've also replaced the gcdroem.cfg (5.0 version) with the same file copied from a 4.9 installation. Still no luck.

I guess I'll have to paste the "_NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A
"-line to every chapter where the word NEC can bee seen, just as you've suggested.

If you or anyone else should have any further tips please let me know as this 5.0 version is starting to become really annoying.

Cheers

Yeah, I added my 3540A in the same place you did Erling, didn't work. So then I went back and added it in every place that had other NEC DVD drives, that didn't work either. My drive already shows up in the burning tab, so my problem's not quite the same as yours.

My driver and date are the same, it's for a generic CD-Rom.

Sorry that it didnt work for you, Erling.
here is the nec website page with the latest firmware and drivers: http://www.necsam.com/Optical/
My driver is the same date, but i have got the latest firmware update.
I also put the "_NEC DVD_RW ND-3520AW" in the file under a header called "[AUTODETECT CD DEVICE]{RecorderType:IDE/ATAPI}<gcdrmmc.dll>" it is about 2/3 the way down in the file.
Other than that I don't know. I wish I could help more.
GL!

I had to do 2 steps to get my burner working again. 1st I did the 1st bit that Henryk outlined. (repeated here from earlier in the thread).

I have a NEC ND-3540A and have been experiencing the same issue. Have fixed using following:

browse to this folder
C:\program files\iTunes\CD Configuration\gcdroem.cfg

Open with Notepad (or similar)
search for a line containing all the NEC drives e.g. ND-3500A
insert another line but now using your drive i.e. ND-3540A

Close the editor and save.

Now iTunes should see your drive in the edit/prefs/advanced/burn tab.

Then I went to another file in the same area.

I opened: gcdrtype.cfg (with notepad)Found the profile from another Plextor drive that had a similar configuration.

In my case I have a Plextor 716a. I just found the area for the Plextor 712a and copied all the lines for that drive and then added them to the list again at the bottom.

Then I changed all the 712a references to 716a.
Saved and closed.
Once I had done that I shutdown iTunes and restarted it and I was able to burn.

gcdrtype.cfg apparently sets up the parameters that your drive can use and without an entry in this file it will not burn. It will go look at the drive and the cancel the burn.

Sorry for the double post...

Solution works fine for 3540A to get it to recognize, but now no CD will burn, it auto-cancels then tells me this:

"iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media"

As I've used both this media and burner in 4.9 I don't believe that's the problem, plus I've tried down to 8x in the prefs to no avail.
