Ok, managed to download the update two hours ago. It updated the phone and rebooted it, it then failed to re-activate the phone because the Apple Store server used for activations freaked out. It timed out several times. Then I received an unexpected error for a while. I disconnected the bricked phone and re-plugged it multiple times.

Finally Apple appears to have repaired/rebooted their servers and it finally connected and activated my first gen iPhone with 2.0 firmware! Now it's syncing my data back.

If you are encountering timeouts or unexpected errors after firmware upgrade and first time Apple Store connection, the problem is the phone cannot re-activate itself because the servers slow or down. This leaves you with an iPhone that shows a USB cable pointing to iTunes and can only make emergency calls (911 only). Keep retrying you will eventually connect and the activation only takes a few seconds. Once activated the phone will do a full sync to restore your data.

I regret trying to upgrade today with all the 3G activations going on. Try to wait a couple of days and it should get much more reliable. Apple and AT&T servers are obviously overloaded by so many users trying to activate. Same thing happened with the 1st gen iPhone but it's even more popular now!

Picked up my new 3G iPhone this morning. None of the phones could be activated at the AT&T store. The problem was at all the local stores. So, the manager told all the employees to just give everyone their phones and let us leave with them unactivated and to just activate them ourselves at home.

So, I'm sitting here with a new 16GB iPhone 3G and patiently waiting to actually use it. I had to move mountains to get my wife to agree to let me switch to AT&T for this thing, so I really hope it works. I'd hate to give her any more reasons to laugh at me 🙂
