iPhone 2.0 - "Accessing iTunes Store. . ." FOREVER

During the iPhone 2.0 upgrade my iTunes CAN NOT connect to the iTunes store. I flushed my DNS, restarted iTunes, restarted my phone. . .etc, etc. Stubbled upon a thread suggesting reinstalling iTunes. I uninstalled iTunes. . .BUT THE ITUNES DOWNLOAD PAGE IS BROKEN. So I can't download iTunes now.

Yes, it appears it is a "scarce resource" problem. We have too many requests knocking at the door(s) to Apple's servers and it's just a matter of timing as to whether the server gets around to serving your request in the queue before your request times out. However, that is just my semi-educated guess.

+I just got off of the phone with iPhone tech support. (had to use my landline!)+

+After a 20 minute wait, I got to talk to Ashley. She said there are 1100 people on hold and everyone she talked to so far is having the same "accessing iTunes" problem.+

+She said DO NOT disconnect your phone. Intead, when you get the message saying it timed out, click ok. Then click on any other heading, Music for example, in your itunes. Then go back and click on your iPhone icon.+

+Keep doing this repeatedly to keep your place in line.+

+I did this for the past 10 minutes STRAIGHT through and I am now done!!! Honest to god! I dont know how to do screen shots or whatever, but I'm done.+

I also wonder how much of this is due to the fact that MobileMe is not yet up. If one tries to navigate to http://www.mac.com s/he will get redirected to http://www.mac.com/maintenance/:

*MobileMe web applications not yet available.*
+The MobileMe transition is underway but is taking longer than expected. While core services such as desktop mail, iDisk and sync are available, the new MobileMe web applications are not yet online. Thank you for your patience as we complete the upgrade.+

This is obviously the result of poor planing on the part of Apple. Sure, I could have waited a few days to do the update but they certainly should not have expected anybody to want to wait to update to the latest and greatest. Now like thousands of people, I have an unusable iphone on a Friday where a lot of business needs to get done before the weekend.

I have tried the click back and forth method now for 20 minutes or so and still no luck. Perhaps Apple is not yet ready to become the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Obviously it takes more than a great product. Infrastructure????

I would advise Apple to be completely transparent here and explain what broke and how they intend to fix it. A little bonus to all of us who are stranded in the communication wasteland for the entire day (hopefully not more than that) would also be appreciated.

Let's see what happens.
