I get the same thing with iPhone 3G. Download .mp4 video podcast from Democracy NOW to iTunes on my Mac and it plays ok there. Select "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone and Mac iTunes says files are "already in the correct format". Sync to iPhone and on the phone, the thumbnail appears for the video file but it refuses to play, get error pop-up: "This movie format is not supported."

Looks like a bug to me. Any word from Apple?

Still not syncing movies. I converted one to m4v and it still does not upload to my iphone. It also wipes out the music that I had on it which is no big deal, but the movie will not upload to iphone. any other ideas? Do you think they will have some type of fix? this is obviously a universal problem and not just isolated. Thanks for any help from this forum.

Same problem here. I have a collection of videos captured with Tubesock 2.0.3 that happily played on my iPod Touch 1.1.4. They were all encoded as MPEG-4 using codec H.264, which is supposed to be supported on the iPod Touch. After upgrading to the iPod Touch 2.0 software all my videos from this source now state 'This Movie Format Is Not Supported' when I try to open them on the iPod Touch. The still all display okay in iTunes 7.7.

I changed the settings in Tubesock to encode using MPEG-4 rather than H.264 and tried that. The newly captured video that I tried opens and displays correctly both in iTunes 7.7 and iPod Touch 2.0. This suggests that the H.264 codec is not currently supported in iPod Touch 2.0 - either intentionally or through an Apple oversight.

I hope Apple soon respond to this and make their intentions clear as I do not want to waste time recapturing all my Tubesock video content.

I am convinced that the problem is with MP4 files encoded with the H.264 codec. This is because my non H.264 codec MP4 files work fine. Tubesock 2.0.3 enables MP4 movies to be created in either MP4 codec or H.264 codec format so I am now saving new files with the MP4 codec (which work fine with iPod Touch 2.0). I hope support for H.264 reappears in the next release of the iPod Touch software, so I can play my 'back catalogue'.

Has anyone else reached the same conclusion?

None of my MP4 videos files encoded with the H.264 codec will work on my ipod touch since I upgraded to 2.0 I get the THIS MOVIE FORMAT IS NOT SUPPORTED message.

I have been able to download some new video files via tubesock using the video for ipod(MP4) option and those files do play on my touch under version 2.0

My MP4 files encoded with the H.264 codec still work just fine in itunes

I think the problem is even bigger, my MP4 files encoded with the H.264 codec will not open as videos in quick time, nor can I open them as video files using EyeTV 3.0. My MP4 files encoded with the H.264 codec do open using VCL.

the question is what is the solution going to be? do you think apple is going to notice this problem and provide a fix? is there some effective way to convert the videos with the H.264 codec or will one have to reload all the videos again?

I've done a lot more playing with different encoders. I have an original
iPhone, upgraded last weekend to 2.0.

- videos converted to H.264 with Nero Recode and previously downloaded to the phone when it had 1.1.4 firmware work fine. If I delete and re-download, they still work. I haven't tried deleting from both iTunes and the iPhone and then reloading.
- any video converted to H.264 with Recode that is new - i.e., has never been on the phone before - fails with "This Movie Format is not Supported".
The same videos work on an iPod Touch still at 1.1.4.
- videos converted with CloneDVD Mobile rather than Nero Recode work. I'm not sure whether they are H.264 or mpeg4 (have to check at home tonight).
- videos converted with HandBrake to H.264 work. I enable the "iPod Atom" and have not tried without this. I have not tried mpeg4 formats from HandBrake.

So, I have proof of existence that H.264 videos will work with 2.0.

The business with prior Nero Recode converted videos working but new videos failing really baffles me. iTunes or the iPhone clearly has some history that isn't cleared when the video is deleted.

For now I'm very happy with using HandBrake. It's slower than Nero Recode, but it makes adding chapters very easy - very nice for concert DVD's when you want to find a specific song.

One last observation. With 2.0 many syncs fail for me before finishing. The iPhone drops out of the syncing screen, and minutes later iTunes gives up. Using manual mode instead and dragging the same large files that I was attempting to sync to the iPhone in iTunes fixes this problem. Also, on my Windows XP system, immediately after the upgrade the camera on the iPhone would be repeatedly detected, popping up a Windows dialog box. Whenever this happened iTunes would disconnect from the iPhone. I had to follow some instructions at Apple support to disable automatic connection to the iPhone when it was detected. This was causing many syncs to fail.

According to the Apple description, only certain H.264 videos will work: "baseline profile" and so on. If you use an app with a specific iPhone setting, you will be OK. But a general H.264 may not, unless you do the settings within H.264 properly.

Ok, for me it's even weirder. I have a bunch of videos I encoded using iSquint, using H.264. SOME of them don't play on the ipod after the 2.0 upgrade. I've tried re-encoding them, and they still don't work! This makes absolutely no sense to me. It's possible that while I got the original files from the same source that they didn't all originate in the same way. When I did the original encode, I remember seeing different output in the log file for different files. So, at the moment I'm guessing that some file have something in them that changes the transcoding process. I'm currently in the process of trying to encode one of the affected files without H.264. And the answer is.... It works!!!!

Regardless, there's clearly a glitch somewhere. What really gets me is that these files will play fine in iTunes, just not on the iPod! I'm guessing that for some reason, the error can lie in the original source file. Mine were originally .avi. Perhaps this is similar to when apple tightened up their firmware checking and some people's RAM failed because it was out of spec, and Apple just hadn't been checking. Previously, playing some of these movies would occasionally crash and revert back to the home screen without warning. I wonder if it was the same ones. Maybe Apple's instituted some sanity check to make sure it's 'really' in a good format, and some stuff fails the check.

Either way, it'd sure be nice of them to tell us about it. I definitely have movies from the same set and source that ARE in H.264 and are working fine.

I think everyone is on the wrong track here because I am randomly having this problem and ALL of my videos are from the iTunes Store. I BOUGHT them and can't play them on my Edge iPhone.

Using the steps I posted above, EVERY SINGLE TIME, I was able to get them to play but its really annoying and time consuming. I should just be able to sync them and be done with it but, if I try to simply sync a tv show, I get the same error everyone else is getting.

Add in:
iTunes crashing because of my iPhone periodically
Apps crashing on startup on the phone
iPhone backups taking 20+ minutes
iPhone syncing that doesn't really sync (says its syncing but phone does not)
and
syncing randomly causes iPhone to reboot

I really don't think this 2.0 upgrade was worth it. I really wish I could go back in time and decide to wait for 2.0.1 or 2.1 like my husband is.... :o(

I could not play any of my videos after the update. I found that if you right click the video in itunes and choose "convert selection for itunes/itouch" The newly encoded video itunes creates will now play. Then delete the original video file to save space. All my videos were originally encoded with Nero Recode and none of them worked until itunes converted them. Hope this helps.

I have exchanged a few e-mails with Nero support in the last days. It turns out that the newest iPod Profile in Nero Recode (called "iPod/iPhone AVC") produces files which cannot be read with firmware 2.0 (they are fine with firmware 1.1.4, though).
This profile is available since Nero Recode 3, which itself is available with Nero 8.
So anything produced with Nero 7 works on firmware 2.0.
One can activate the "old" profiles also with Recode 3 and thus produce files that work on firmware 2.0, but they look ugly because the max. resolution allowed is 320x240, i.e. half of the touch's screen resolution.

What I do right now is use the "Nero Digital AVC" profile and disable the stuff that is not in the base profile. The result plays nicely on firmware 2.0 and it looks good. The only drawback is that these files no longer play on an "old" iPod, such as the 5G harddisk model.

I also briefly tried CloneDVD Mobile: The picture looks very nice (better than is Nero Recode), but the Audio is out of sync by 1/4 to 1/2 second, and I simply can't stand this.

Regards, Martin

P.S. Nero support essentially threw in the towel and told me that it doesn't work right now. They didn't tell me whether they will do something or not.

This is a wild scene. I also had a bunch of YouTube videos obtained via TubeSock, which played fine before the upgrade last week. They still play in iTunes but not on the iPhone anymore! So I went to Get Info and looked at the file types. The ones which played were m4v and the ones that did not were mp4. SO, I went into the file Music/iTunes/Movies, wherever it is and simply changed the extensions from mp4 to m4v. It STILL didn't work! I am now attempting to do this conversion within iTunes. I don't have Right-Click so I am trying Control-Click on the movie in iTunes and selecting "Convert for iPhone". It is converting right now, so we shall see. Gordon
