iPhone 3G Accelerometer

Does anyone agree that changing the view in safari is more jerky than previous iPhone? iTunes seems smooth enough as does the photo gallery.
Or is ti possible that it is just my phone?
TIA,
John

Bought my iphone 3g 8 GB at 5 am on launch day in Italy and all I can say is that
da phone is cool and truly revolutionary BUT this accelerometer issue really *** and is a major pain in the a**

Software or Hardware glitch, that is the question!

Anyone has the DEFINITE answer/confirmation from Apple? Enough of speculation we need FACTS!

Cheers from da Pete

Actually, since I updated yesterday, I haven't had to restart the phone once to get back my accelerometer. Prior 2.0.2 it worked just after a restart, but never after sleep, just as many others reported here.

But now it seems to be alright! I'll post here directly if I notice the bug again.

I just wanted to chime in to say that the very annoying bug where I had to restart the iPhone to get the accelerometer back in business STILL haven't annoyed me since 2.02 was installed. S for me, it looks like something in that update made the difference.

Either that, or I dropped it and that made it work... 🙂

And it still works! Apparently, something in the 2.02 fixed something with the accelerometer, but not everyones. Strange...it would be very interesting to know the story about this, and I'm sure there are a few in Cupertino who knows exactly how this happend...

Why don't u just record a set of video to prove that your phone is not working? I have got mine placed (16 White) because of the same problem with the accelerometer today (@ Yorkdale Apple Store). They have replaced it for me without questions asking because it wasn't working when I tried to show them. (But it was working randomly 30s before I have a chance to show it... pretty annoying)

And now it's back to the way it was: it doesn't work. Pictures I take are turned upside down, since the accelerometer thinks I'm holding the iPhone upside down. Safari refueses to change view to wide screen, I can't play Labyrinth or any other accelerometer game. It basically *****. Big time.

Of course it's a hardware issue, but as someone else pointed out, it's stil somewhat related to the software since a reset resolves the problem.

I'm not waiting for 2.1 - I'll see if I can get it replaced.

HI, Exactly the same problem with my phone I bought mine a couple of hours ago and it seemed to be working fine up until i updated the software to 2.02 and since then the accelerometer will not respond even after I restart. It will be stuck in portrait mode and after the restart and will only change to landscape in safari, which it does regardless to wear my iphone is in landscape. After that its stuck there.

Well, it seems firmware 2.1 has fixed the "screen doesn't rotate after sleeping" problem!!

Since installing the new firmware all accelerometer functions have worked perfectly, even after sleeping for several minutes.

Previously I was able to reproduce the problem 100% of the time by just letting the phone sleep for 30 seconds or more.

I can now take photos without having to hold my phone upside down, view webpages in landscape mode and play acceleromter based games without having to wait 3+ minutes for the reset!

(Let's just hope I haven't spoken too soon...)

Well done Apple, I'm very impressed

Still doesn't work for me with 2.1. Applications (like games) still act as if I'm holding my iPhone tilted to the left. Safari, iPod, etc. go to landscape most of the time. When they do it's really hard to get them to rotate back to normal. I've never been able to get it to work after a forced shutdown (sleep+home) or a normal shutdown.

I, too, was looking forward to this update, because resellers here in Belgium won't let me return it for a new one. They tell me it has to go in for repair, which probably means I'll be without for weeks, and unsure about the state they will return it back to me (scratches, etc.).

Bummer 😐

I got a new 3g on Friday. It would only go into landscape in the camera mode so I figured it was a software issue. Would not landscape for safari or any other app even photos. I was planning on returning it in the morning but decided to slap it a few times as someone else recommended. It now rotates into landscape. Not sure if I should still return it.....
