iPhone 3G Accelerometer

Sorry to hear that. Do you have the "screen doesn't rotate after sleeping for 30 seconds" bug, or a different problem?

I've heard the new firmware has improved the rotation delay in Safari, Photos, etc, so I was hopeful it would fix the not rotating after sleep problem too. In 5 hours I'll be able to test it out for myself..

Its not the accelerometer, its the 2.0 firmware. Its the result of the bugs in the firmware that will hopefully get fixed too.

Updated my aus iphone 3g to the 2.0.1 software and the issue still occurs.
Still no call back from optus about my replacement so shall call them again tomorrow and find out thats happening

2.0.1 does not fix the "screen doesn't rotate after sleeping" bug, so I guess replacement is now the only option. (I don't hold out much hope that 2.1 would be any different)

There's quite of few of us experiencing the problem, and I suspect there are many more that are just confused as to why some accelerometer based games don't work properly, and their photos are being taken upside down, eg:

I had the exact same problems with my 3g. Stuck in landscape mode, pictures being taken upside down,games not working... I waited for the software 2.0.1 to come out before I returned it for exchange. The software update did not fix the problem. I took it to the apple store any exchanged it foe a new one. Have not had the problem since. Since I never had a properly working phone to begin with, I had no idea of the many problems this was causing. My replacement is like a whole new phone. This is a hardware problem! Get it replaced ASAP. I would like to commend the ape customer service for the outstanding customer service I recieved at their Norfolk VA store.

update: problem returned this morning. Although this phone doesn't seem to do it as often as my last one. It does indeed seem to be software related. It seems to happen when the phone wakes up from sleep. Anyway... Hopefully apple will fix it soon. Sorry for the bad graMmer. iPhone keyboard takes some getting used to.

Just thought I'd report in... I too am having this issue on an intermittent basis. It is not consistent, but occasionally when using Safari or the iPod, I can't get the UI to rotate. Then, other times, it'll work just fine (right now it is fine). Unlike others here I haven't really noticed any relationship to sleeping at all, but I put it to sleep all the time (every time I put it in my pocket) so I'd really never know. Usually, I can eventually get it to rotate without being forced to turn the phone off and then on again. Sometimes I need to exit out of Safari or the iPod app, but then it'll usually start behaving.

I'm currently using a white 16GB iPhone on 2.0.1. The update doesn't seem to have made any difference. Still happens occasionally.

My issue isn't too bad and there is no Apple store within a 4.5hr drive of here so I'm going to live with it for now and hope for a future firmware fix (besides, I'd never get it to actually misbehave for a Genius in person).

I received my 8GB iPhone in Sydney Australia and had the same issue from day one...

After waking the phone from sleep the accelerometer would always stop working completely and I have to reboot the iPhone to get it it "work". When it did "work" the screen will flip upside down when using Calculator, Safari, iPod Cover flow and Movies amd games would be unplayable.

No matter how many times I restored and updated to 2.0.1 it still failed.

Went to the Genuis bar at the Apple Store, they tested and confirmed the problem. It was a harware fault. They replaced with a new phone quickly and now the new phone works perfect!

The staff there were friendly and sorted the problem fast.

Hi, does anybody know if Apple knows about this issue? I have the "screen doesn't rotate after sleeping for 30 seconds" bug, and I think this is a software bug, not much of a hardware. I tried going to my local cellphone company and they were clueless about this issue. I don't want to return the phone just yet because it might take more than a month to receive a new one (which might be from the same batch). I hope this can be solved with a firmware update. Any ideas?

I'm on my 2nd phone now.. as my 1st was replaced by Optus, for a pixel issue..

Now with my replacement, on the day i received it (friday), it has got an accelerometer issue. I swear optus gave me a refurbished iPhone, as when i hooked it up to iTunes, it had some other guy's name for the iPhone. LAI YEO.

I should of got a brand new phone as my phone was only 9 days old.

Anyways... I've restored the phone few times now.. not luck.. the thing still basically tilts to the bottom right of the phone... use safari and when i turn the phone to the left.. the it rotates to landscape and its upside down. upright position its fine...

Cube Runner and Labrynth are useless, when with this fault.

There is no Apple store in melbourne yet. and I'm not sure if a reseller will replace my phone on the spot as some people have been able to at the genuis bar.
looks like my only option is to get it sent back to optus from the ALLPHONES STORE. another 5 days without the phone.....

Well you're lucky you only have to be without the phone for five days. If I return the phone, it'll take 3 weeks and maybe I'll get a new one. I still think this can be fixed with a firmware update. Any ideas?

I was also having the same issue then yesterday I went to the Apple store at Yorkdale. As soon as the Mac genius saw the problem, he replaced it immediately. He didn't even ask any questions. It's been working since I got the new one so I suggest you guys get a replacement from the Apple store.

Like alot of folk here I have had the Accelerometer issue from day dot. I was waiting for the firmware update to fix the issue. But seeing as how that did not happen I went to the Apple Store (here in Glasgow). The guy barely looked at it for 30 seconds once I explained the issue. 10 minutes later I was walking out with a new working iPhone.
Seem they must know this is an issue...so I suggest getting to an Apple Store if you can or at least going back to your provider.

I'm having exactly the same issues myself. Unfortunately, the problem is pretty intermittent, so demonstrating the problem at my Applestore will undoubtedly prove challenging! Before taking it in, however, a key question I have for all the people who have been exchanging their phones is: how are ensuring your data is safe? Do Apple wipe the old phone in front of you in the store, or have you been restoring the phone to factory settings before taking it in? Also, is it possible to recover data from a wiped phone? Would greatly appreciate your thoughts.
