You can’t charge the iPhone 3G on iPod Audio Systems

First I want to say that my experience purchasing an iPhone at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh, PA was excellent. All has gone well, except for the following problem:

I tried to connect my new 3G iPhone to my car audio system just as I did with my previous iPod Touch and, before that, my iPod mini. I was surprised that I got a message that my new iPhone was not compatible with the charging system. I thought it was something strange I might have been doing, until I saw this post on Apple Gazette:

I have this exact same problem. Cannot charge on previous iPod charging systems! Apple or someone else, please help. This is an extremely odd connection problem We'll likely need some help from Apple on this one.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

To give you some alternate feedback --

My Altec lansing iPhone speaker system in the house DOES charge.

My Griffin autoTrip charger in my car also DOES charge.

My thought is that those speaker systems and chargers that were "works with iPHone" labeled continue to work with the 3G, and those that happened to work with the 1st Gen but not iPhone certified probably do not.

Common sense.
Everything I buy comes without such a warning.
Expecting everything you buy to be compatible with things not even made yet is a bit of a stretch.
I have a bunch of items that don't work with the 3G.
I'm not going to whine about it.
I bought them for my other iPods, and they still work fine.
It would be great if these also worked with my 3G, and maybe they will, but for now, that's the way it is.
I've got lots of money invested in these things, but I understand this always happens.

I have a iPod charging dock and a iPod audio connection in my VW Touareg. Both devices use to play audio and CHARGE my iPods. On the 11th after opening my 3G iPhone at home I was disappointed to find out that the iPhone no longer charges any more. This is a HUGE problem and very selfish of Apple. I feel like a sucker for investing in iPod accessories up until this point. This is a issue that needs to fixed NOW!!!

Actually, Apple DID have a program indicating that items would be compatible with future products, its called the "Works with iPhone" certification. Since this is still an iPhone, and not even substantially different from the previous device known as an iPhone, I think it is very reasonable to assume that "Works with iPhone" means, "works with iPhone", not "works with this iPhone now, but not future iPhones, even ones coming out in a few weeks.

In fact, there are "works with iPhone" products available for purchase at the apple store right now that don't "work with the iPhone".

What is the point of product certifications if they mean nothing? Especially when the program was in progress mere weeks before new products are released, and continues to be in progress (falsely), after the new ones are released.

Wow, you've certainly done a lot of work to figure this out. Thanks for trying that. Did you hook up an external 5v power supply to those pins?

I'm in a similar situation... I purchased the OEM iPod Connection Kit for my 2005 Mazda 3, and now it doesn't work with the iPhone. Lovely, considering it required me to take half of my dash apart to install it. 😟

Someone's going to make BIG money creating a dock-connector-pass-through device that does 3 things:

1. 12v -> 5v
2. Shield from GSM buzz
3. Identify itself as iPhone 3G compatible.

Just to add one more whine... mine isn't working either.

To be fair, my car kit, and I'm betting most of yours, was sold for iPod, not iPhone. But my original iPhone did work, despite the warning that the connector was a non-iPhone compatible device, and it would have been very considerate of Apple to a) tell us this would happen and b) work with a manufacturer to have a solution ready. Even if I had noticed that firewire support was being dropped, I wouldn't have paid attention... I didn't know that car kits use firewire.

I sure hope Belkin or someone is paying attention - whoever figures out how to fix this will get gobs of good will for their efforts.
