It seems this is a common problem.

I spent two hours yesterday in the Apple store and got my 20 days old iphone 3G changed for a new one due to this issue. Today I tried to sync again and the problems persists. It does the backup but it takes forever. If you haven't upload to much information or if you have the mobileme membership you just can cancel the process by clicking the X besides the Backing Up message window.

It is a shame Apple launched a very expensive "toy" with such flaws....basic functionality not working fine and having the users to suffer the consequences of bad testing.

I mean, it is not a matter of disabling it or enabling certain functionality or finding workarounds. The phone and all functionality should be working fine and needs to be efficient!.

So far I've synced rebooted bout an app from the iPhone. It's still taking seconds, not hours to sync and even upload the app to iTunes from the iPhone. I think we're safe to maybe kinda hopefully kill this issue. What has been your experience.
It's still sluggish in email, I get 5 Bars in 3G where I normally get one or two but it fell off into Edge anyway. So there's more to do in other threads but hey syncing is faaaaast now.

Installed 2.1 and the Backup and app Install speeds are MUCH faster after the first sync.

Over all I this 2.1 is a GOOD patch and what 2.0 should have been. 🙂

Well, it WAS syncing much faster and now my backups don't finish. Earlier today it went smoothly.

The only difference is this evening I went to install an update to my PC (Windows XP SP3). The update failed and rolled back systems drivers or something. I can still transfer apps to my iPhone but its not backing up. I don't want to do a restore because its such a pain. Any ideas?

Here's my update...Took about 20-30 minutes to do the update including the backup. Afterwards, I fiddled with some settings, added two apps from the app store using my iphone and also added some data to one of the d/l apps. The first sync after that took about an hour, which had me worried, but after that, the syncs have been very, very quick - under a minute. I am thinking that perhaps the first sync after the install takes longer because there are more changes due to the update being applied. Just my observation.

the reason the backup takes so long is not the backup itself but the time it takes for errors and bugs to be reported to Apple.
On that first day when you sync the iPhone it prompted you whether or not you wanted error messages sent to apple. You probably said “Yes” like i did, thinking it was new and if you had a bug, you would want Apple’s help.
To remove this setting, all you have to do is right click on your iPhone in iTunes under Devices and click “Reset Warnings”. Now disconnect and reconnect and you should be prompted to report errors or not. NOT! Now sync and see what happens.
