iPhone 3G bluetooth echo?

Hi --

I had a 1st gen iPhone (1.1.4) that I would pair with my BMW, worked great. Yesterday I bought an iPhone 3G. I can still pair it with my car, but now all of my conversations have a terrible echo. It's impossible to talk to anyone - we both hear a delayed echo of my voice. What is causing this? Is it software? Is it my phone that is a dud? Is the bluetooth in the new iPhone substandard?

Thanks.

After testing a bunch of settings on and off here is what I found.

Nothing seems to make any difference except the *bluetooth volume*. Not sure why these shipped with a setting of "1" out of 10 but when I turn this up and get between 6 and 10 squares, the echo goes away completely (unless I crank up the car volume).

The person on the other end didn't notice any echo but I will call others as the day goes on.

I have a '08 BMW M3 sedan with iDrive, and while my address book is syncing no problem with the iDrive, I have the horrible Bluetooth echo when using my new 3G phone. With that being said, with my last iPhone (and I got on the first day last year as well) it initially had an echo as well, but seemed to be cured by software updates.

The echo on this phone is HORRIBLE and makes is almost unusable unless you turn the volume way down on the car stereo when on a call.

Okay Guys. Swapped out my phone for a new one this morning.

1. Echo is still there on default settings BUT it was less strangely.
2. Adjusting bluetooth volume up (ie, when on a paired call) did minimize my echo but you could still hear it if you cranked up your car volume.
3. When speaking to the guy at the genius bar he pointed out that when in a 3G area, voice actually does push through those lines so when reception is low or bad on 3G, sometimes turning it off all together and flopping back to Edge will increase call quality significantly.

Backwards lame and very ATT but also a little bit of Apple's fault on not testing out handsfree implementation better. If it's not fixed I'm going to return this thing and go back to Blackberry and Verizon.

It's a phone FIRST.

This is also happening on my 2007 Toyota Camry.

Previously I had a Samsung phone on Verizon. The bluetooth worked fine with no echo. Sometimes people complained it was hard to understand me, but that was it.

Upgraded to the iPhone 3G and now I hear an echo on my end. There is no echo heard by the person I am talking to. On the other hand, the person I am talking to has noticed an improvement in the audio quality -- I sound much clearer and easier to understand.

The echo on my end is pretty quite so I can live with it -- although it is annoying.

You can add a 2006 MB E350 to the list of vehicles with OEM bluetooth issues. Mine is the opposite of what most others reported though. I can hear clearly, but the folks I call have such terrible echoes they can barely hear me.

I fooled with the volume, turned off 3G, re-paired the handsfree... None of those worked.

I switched back to my BlackBerry Curve and all is well again. I'm afraid this is a deal killer for me, so my iPhone is going back, as are two other people I know who are having the same problem. One is in an X5 and one in a Prius.

This seems like an uncharacteristic flaw for apple, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised...

don't know if it's a permanent fix, but the volume settings mentioned in this string worked for me.

I previously had a bad echo on my BMW, even called the dealer. Then, while ON A BLUETOOTH CALL I turned the volume rocker on the side of the iPhone all the way up and turned the volume button on my steering wheel down. Echo instantly gone in the middle of the call.

Try it.

I have a similar but different problem that I detail in this thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1624056&tstart=0

it sounds fine on my end, but on the other end it totally *****. I'll try playing with BT volume to see if it helps, otherwise I think I'm going to return the 3G and go back to my old lowly 1st gen 4gig. at this point I have 3G off for battery life (and yes for phone reception which is significantly worse) and so I guess I can get pretty much the same benefits to updating to 2.0 on the old hand set.

Me too! Have a Fiat 500 with Blue&Me. Original iPhone been working for 4 months (trasnferring phonebook, making and receiving calls - text reader never worked).

3G only partially works and has following problems:

echo
will not transfer phonebook to car or use phonebook to call
text reader doesn't work

I also note that generally the call quality is worse on 3G.

Hope this is sorted soon!!
