iPhone 3G bluetooth echo?

Hi --

I had a 1st gen iPhone (1.1.4) that I would pair with my BMW, worked great. Yesterday I bought an iPhone 3G. I can still pair it with my car, but now all of my conversations have a terrible echo. It's impossible to talk to anyone - we both hear a delayed echo of my voice. What is causing this? Is it software? Is it my phone that is a dud? Is the bluetooth in the new iPhone substandard?

Thanks.

I have wrote on this message board earlier about how bad my echo is on my 2008 BMW 528i.

I spoke to an AppleCare rep and she said that she talked to Tech Support and as of Tuesday, July 15th, it was not a known problem to them.

She said that "hopefully the a software update will correct the problem in 2 to 4 weeks". Let's hope so.

However, it's seems crazy that they are not aware of this problem.

Has anyone else got any other news in regards to this problem?

I don't get an echo in my Prius with handsfree. Instead I get what sounds like an air horn followed by what sounds like a fax machine. Conversation of any kind is impossible.

I spoke with an Apple "Genius" today who told me that this is a known issue. Apparently the iPhone 3G will pair successfully only with the Apple BT Headset. All other BT devices have varying degrees of problems. Apparently the issue has been escalated because of the numbers of not very happy drivers who can't use handsfree in states where it's required. But there is no ETA for a fix. The "Genius" could only suggest that I write to feedback@apple.com and ask for more information. I did, but I have not heard back.

Same problem here with BMW 2007 328i. Three phones I've had previously paired perfectly and had no echo.

Here's a question though...Anyone WITH a BMW or any other car on the list that doesn't have the echo problem? Could it possibly just be a bad batch of phones?

I have an appointment to switch out the phone on Saturday...Will keep you guys posted.

Making some progress with the echo issue.

I have a 05 BMW with iDrive that was having iEcho problems.

So last night I turned off a bunch of features to save battery power AND was messing around with the bluetooth volume, and NO echo.

Turned off:
3G
Data Roaming
Manually get my email

Turned up:
Bluetooth Volume (when using the bluetooth device, turn the volume up on the side) It will say "bluetooth"

I will try to identify which one actually made the difference but in the meantime I am enjoying echo free phone conversations.

That's great to hear. I will try that as a solution this morning. On some BMW forums there was mention with messing with volume to minimize the echo. It was stated on there that it didn't actually go away completely but it sounds like it has for you.

Regardless I am going to swap out my phone on Saturday and see if there's a possibility people on this thread have faulty hardware.

Troubleshooting continues.

We have two iPhone 3Gs purchased from different stores (and hopefully different stocks)... One is being connected to my mom's Lexus LS460 (no echo whatsoever), and one connected to my Infiniti G37.

I will borrow my mom's phone one of these days when I visit and try to connect it with my car. If there is no echo with her phone and my car it would suggest that some of the phones have faulty hardware, and hopefully, a swap would solve the problem.

I'll let everyone know in a few days what happens with the echo problem...

I got a BMW 335i also, and after turning the volume up, I couldn't hear myself echoing anymore. I thought it was great to have a simple fix, but after calling a few people, they said they could hear me echoing. I need to play around more to see if it's the Bluetooth, or just the echoing that happens once in a while, but 2 out of 4 people I called during my lunch break after I raised the volume heard an echo on my voice on their end. One of them I called back and he still heard it. Nobody complained of an echo to me before I raised the volume. I'll need to play around more after work.
