Old iPhone chargers and the iPhone 3G

As you may have noticed or read here, old 3rd party iPhone chargers will not work on your 3G iphone and when you try them you will get this error message: "charging is not supported".

I have done some testing and have found that the wall charger that is shipped with the original iPhone will work with the iPhone 3G. Plus old usb cables will charge the phone. If the old factory wall charger will work with the iPhone 3G then why shouldn't the 3rd party chargers. Both my wall and car charger from before are rejected by the 3G.

Does the old official charger working mean Apple is specifically disabling old 3rd party chargers? Could also contribute to the lower phone price.

The dock connector port on iPods and iPhones has the ability to charge via a Firewire or USB connection. The iPhone 3G appears to be the first device that does not charge via Firewire. It seems some 3rd-party chargers are using the Firewire capability of the dock for charging iPod/iPhone devices. This makes sense. I think the Firewire standard is 12V. USB is 5V. The standard electrics in a car is 12V. So be wary of any in-car chargers. Make sure they work with the iPhone 3G and not just the original iPhone.

I just talked to apple asking them about bluetooth compatibility with the iphone 3G. They said that you cant pair them. Way to go apple. You buy a mediocre headset for iphone that costs 70 quid and when you buy more products of apple i.e iphone 3G cant use them together. Apparently thats how they redeem loyalty.

Many Thanks

This is incorrect. The Apple bluetooth headset works great with the 3G iPhone. I bought my Apple headset last year shortly after getting my launch day iPhone. I just purchased a 3G iPhone and was able to pair it to my headset without issue. It works just the same as it did with my old iPhone. I don't know who gave you your information, but I can tell you for certain it's incorrect. They work just fine together.

You can't use the dual dock, obviously, as it doesn't fit the new 3G iPhone. Also, it appears that Apple won't even be making a dual dock for the 3G iPhone & bluetooth headset as they now sell it without a dock. I just use the travel cable that came with the headset. It works the same as the dock, and it's the only cable I carry now.

Dudes and Dudettes,

Any decent bt headset WILL work with the iPhone 3G. Most are, as suggested, aired with a 0000. The Apple Phone will pair automatically sometimes, if not, make is discoverable and search using the phone. Many time people complain about bt headsets and every time I got it to work. I have yet to see an bt headset not working with a bt phone!

I wonder if the problem is in the difficulty with which the iPhone pairs with some BT hands-free sets? I bought a Jabra 5050 Visor style Hands-free set. I used it with an LG phone I had with Verizon (CA driving became hands-free by law July1). It paired immediately. I bought the Jabra 5050 because I wanted the Visor style but also because I wanted something that Apple said was compatible with the 3G I knew was coming. When I then tried to pair it with the 3G the other day, the phone searched forever and couldn't find the Jabra. It seemed as though it wasn't going to work as advertised. Finally, after diddling with the Jabra it did pair but after many tries. If we hadn't stayed with it, I might have concluded that it wasn't going to work.

I wonder if the 3G is just somewhat harder/slower to pair than we're used to? It works fine.
