LEAP authentication from iPhone 2.0

If someone knows how to do this can you please post instructions. I could not figure out how; I was expecting to be able to do it in a fashion similar to how it's done under Leopard or even Tiger(the workaround).

thanks

G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

When I open an application (such as mail), it pops the dialog with the network, offering me to join it. I see the correct network name, the signal icon, and the lock symbol, just as you'd expect. If I tap the network, it immediately pops another dialog "Unable to join network xxxx" (where xxxx is the network name), and when I OK that it puts me back at the "join network" dialog.

If I go into Settings -> WiFi and set up the network that way (using your suggestion of WPA Enterprise), after I enter the Username/Password it says at the top "Joining network xxxx..." and the wheel icon just spins and spins forever, and I have to hit the Home button to get out.

I'm bringing the Mac laptop into work tomorrow and will try to connect with that.

Has anyone figured this out yet??

I have the same situation concerning LEAP...I can not connect my iPhone 3G to our wireless LEAP network (AND I'M THE IT GUY!!!) I can get connected to our wireless network but it won't authenticate my credentials...Like others in this post we can connect any other device with no problems because they have the option to select LEAP, ie: Intel ProSet wireless, BLACKBERRYs...But the iPhone?? NOOOOOO...GRRRRRR....I haven't tried the config utility yet, which i am going to do in a few min...I HAVE TO INSTALL IE 7...what the ****...Someone needs to show the companies what KISS means...KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!! Another thing is trying to figure out how to start the **** config utility...Apple has no instructions during the install to say "oh, by the way, you have to open a web browser and type in http://localhost:3000 to start the utility"...

Ok enough venting...so, like i said, i'm one of the IT guys here and have access to all our servers...RADIUS included and everything is open to any device, you just need to authentcate with your network credentials...so why is this so hard for the iphone??

Hi JcRod73,

I did not install IE 7; Safari worked great to bring up the utility for me. It does say in the instructions to use localhost3000. Did you read the PDF guide?

Once you run the utility, you can create a LEAP profile, and just email that to your phone. I don't know why Apple requires a profile and we cannot do it directly from the phone...

In any case, I created the profile and installed it, but I still cannot connect to my company's LEAP network - "Unable to connect".

If you can get it to work, please tell me how you did it...

JcRod73,

Did you try the steps posted by infobhan? These steps worked for him as well as myself and several others in my office. None of us used the utility to create a LEAP profile. We did nothing to our iPhones except what is indicated in infobhan's steps. (Frank Malloy has not yet been successful with these steps.) I'm starting to wonder if the utility/LEAP profile is interfering. If you have not yet downloaded a LEAP profile try the infobhan steps first.

Let us know!

BTW I connected to our enterprise server and now have Push email, contacts, calendar. AWESOME!!

Hi Z...

I did try everything possible that i have read online except creating a profile...It's such a pain in the neck because i CAN connect to our wireless network BUT my device doesn't get authenticated...It's not given an internal IP address...what comes up is the self assigned IP...I have tried creating a profile with no luck but i think i still need to try and tweak it...everything works except connecting to our LEAP network...I can get VPN and PUSH email...

JcRod73,

I will be interested to hear how you configured the profile. Mine is (WiFi tab):

SSID: (entered name)
Hidden network: checked
Security type: WEP Enterprise (also tried Any)
Protocols: LEAP checked
Authentication: Username (entered name)

I mailed it to my phone, and installed it successfully. When I access an app that needs the network, it shows my network with a lock symbol and the signal strength. When I select it, it says "Unable to join the network "<name>" and all I can do is OK the dialog.

I have tried the same profile settings with no luck. I even tried exporting a personal key from my PC and importing it into the iPhone, but no luck. I'm thinking that there must be something that is deaper than merely supporting LEAP or not. I'm not sure if you know what encryption your network is using, but mine uses CKIP. Maybe that is the problem. Perhaps the WPA Enterprise setting will handle LEAP with WEP encryption but not LEAP with CKIP encryption. I tried doing a complete restore and then followed the instructions in this thread, but nothing seems to work. Hopefully this is something Apple knows about and can fix in a update.

Hi bryantthesmith,

I do not see a choice for CKIP encryption on the config utility, so you may be out of luck.

From what I can see for my network, we are using WEP encryption with LEAP and even with a profile it is still not working for me. My home Mac laptop can connect fine with my original AirPort card (using MacOS 10.4.11). All I do is select "LEAP", and it connects.

I don't know if there is some compatibility issue with iPhone's LEAP implementation. Some folks are able to connect with the LEAP profile, others say you need no profile, just use WPA Enterprise.

Ok...so i have tried the same settings as you Frank with no luck..i have even brought in one of my co-IT guys and he is also baffled...i don't know if i mentioned this before but i tried calling APPLE and asked about this and they told me that i would have to pay $199.00 to troubleshoot this issue...are you freakin kidding me?? the cost of an iPhone to get something working that suppose to work when you paid for it!!! Oh how they LOVE to screw us...

Well, i'm going to keep tweaking with it...i think i'm going to call them back and complain that i would have to pay $199 to get something fixed that is suppose to work...i'll keep you posted...

Jul 29, 2008 1:22 PM in response to JcRod73

Thanks for the update, JcRod73.

I suspect there is a subtle LEAP compatibility issue that is keeping us from connecting. As I say, I can connect with my home Mac PowerBook, so I know that I've got the username/password correct, and that the wireless network is accepting non-company-issued devices. So, the Mac LEAP software is compatible, but the iPhone is not. Probably some bug Apple has to fix.

Since you communicate with your IT guys (and they seem friendly, unlike mine), can you ask them to check the logs and see what kind of messages occurred when you tried to connect? They should be able to search the logs for your MAC address, and perhaps it will give some insight as to why your connection was rejected.

Keep us informed...

If you have access to the router, you might want to try the suggestion listed in this topic to see if that solves your problem.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1606412
(He basically changes the preamble to long instead of the default short)

If it does work, then those of us who don't have access to the routers are probably out of luck, but it might be something that Apple can fix.

Frank,

Just out of curiosity did you click Settings->Wi-Fi->Other... and then do the name,WPA Enterprise, etc. when following the steps in this posting?

When I go to Settings->Wi-Fi I have always been able to see the network I want to long onto but I can't log onto it. I have to chose "Other..." and then connect 'by-hand'.

I am stumped as to why you guys can't get this to work.
