LEAP authentication from iPhone 2.0

If someone knows how to do this can you please post instructions. I could not figure out how; I was expecting to be able to do it in a fashion similar to how it's done under Leopard or even Tiger(the workaround).

thanks

Yes, I tried it, and it didn't work ("Unable to connect"). I removed my LEAP profile just in case, and followed the steps outlined. But, I'm not surprised it didn't work. We are using WEP, not WPA. If you are using WEP, I'm puzzled how it works for you. WPA and WEP are two completely different encryption mechanisms, as I understand it. And, supposedly you need a profile to enable LEAP.

But, I certainly can't argue with your success!

JcRod73,

Did you create the LEAP profile using the utility, and install it? I think you will need to try this, even though others have gotten connections without it. If you haven't done it, the utility is not hard to use, and you just email the profile to your phone and tap on the attachment and it installs.

In my case, the profile did not work, but it may work for you.

I am unable to change the preambles or any settings of the APs.

Hi JCRod73,

No, never got it to connect, unfortunately. I tried about every option in the utility - and there are not many options. I must have installed and removed about 10 profile variations. Still get "Unable to connect" right away.

Since my personal Mac PowerBook can connect to the same network using its AirPort card and the AirPort set to LEAP (there is no encryption option, just WEP, WPA, WPA2, or LEAP) I have to assume it is possible, but something in the iPhone WiFi software is not compatible with the AP or router we are using. That points to the iPhone as being the problem.

Hopefully, Apple can update the LEAP support to make it more compatible with businesses that use LEAP - if they want to challenge BlackBerry they need to be compatible.

I hear my company will be moving to WPA at some point (LEAP is outdated, security-wise) so perhaps I'll have another chance in the future.

Please let us know what you are able to try.

I can only hope

Kareemm,

Some folks have connected successfully, others have not. I have not been able to connect to my corporate network. I believe I created the profile correctly, and the username/password are correct.

I believe iPhone's WEP/LEAP software has a bug where it is sensitive to a particular AP/router configuration. Someone posted where he changed the preamble (whatever that is) on the base station side from short to long and it worked. Most of us have no access to make changes - we can only change the client side.

If someone has other suggestions, please comment. I hope Apple can make this implementation more robust. The same network connects fine to my PowerBook with AirPort.

I myself have not contacted Apple. This is an Enterprise issue (due to LEAP), and Apple will change $$$ to assist. Also, if you do not have access to your IT dept. who is willing to work with you change router or AP settings you will likely be out of luck. This is certainly my case - my company is supposedly evaluating iPhone, but it has so far not been accepted and IT does not like to talk to the peon users.

If an IT group is officially supporting iPhone for corporate use, they will likely be able to work directly with Apple to resolve an issue like this, but for a regular consumer, I think we are pretty much helpless. A Genius Bar person wouldn't be able to help - again, no access to the router or AP.

My hope is that some corporate IT departments have encountered this issue and are working with Apple so that we can get a fix for robust LEAP connection in a future firmware update.
