Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

hi Ray!

When I try to move any songs into a folder, itunes won't let it. It shows a circle with a line through it and it refuses to let me put the song(s) into any folder. Does anybody have the answer to this?

probably best to repost over in "Using itunes". I've seen this sort of thing before in 4.x, but can't recall off-hand what the appropriate suggestions are. our library-window gurus can probably help.

hi Nic!

Ok, I can't start the WMI Performance Adapter. It says "Class not registered". Whatever shall I do!?

see if this document helps:

if not, try reposting again in your own thread. you're pretty much hidden from view in here. Be sure to state your problem explicitly in the new post. it can help to provide a reference link back to your original posts (it gives some context). there's instructions on how to do that given here:

Okay. Here's my story... I downloaded some new songs from the music store but they weren't copying to my iPod (I had it set to automatically update when I connect my iPod). So, having run into this problem before, I checked to see if Apple had "updated" anything. Sure enough. So, I "updated" both my iTunes & my iPod. Then, when I connected my iPod, instead of copying over the new songs it acted like it was copying over random songs that were already there! And, still, the new songs weren't on my iPod although iTunes was saying my iPod had updated and the ghost list iTunes shows of the songs matched in number the ones in the library (less 7) (but they weren't actually ON my iPod). I attempted to do the update several times (thinking something went awry in the download process) to no avail. So, finally, extremely frustrated, I decided that I would restore my iPod thinking that, then ALL my songs would be 'new' and get copied over. HUGE mistake! Now, it's doing the same thing-saying my songs are copied over but they're not. Only now, I have NO songs on my iPod (b/c I was stupid and "restored it"). I'm getting really peaved at Apple. Everytime I turn around they've got a new "update" and I have to mess with trying to get everything working again. But, this is absolutely the worst EVER! I can't get ANY songs copied onto my iTunes - not even ones from my own CDs. I've followed your advice and it still doesn't work. iTunes says my iPod is updated but my iPod still doesn't have any songs. Oh, and now, everytime I reconnect my iPod to my computer, the iPod set up assistant pops up, asking me to name my iPod and register it. (Actually, it was doing that before I followed your advice--ever since I 'restored' my iPod). Why is is doing that? And, Why, oh, WHY can't I get my songs back onto my iPod. Will someone PLEASE help!?!
