Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

hi Michael!

When I attempt to download it begins, you see the folder flying through space, but it get to a certain point then stops. I have gotten as far as 88% downloaded but it never finishes

hmmm. if you're using windows XP, go to Windows update and make sure you've got Windows Installer 3.1v2. If the problem persists, you might find David's post helpful:

David Kay7, "I FINALLY GOT IT! AND GUESS WHAT?", 10:28am Sep 14, 2005 CDT

if you're on XP, see:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

if the problem still persists, it would be best to start your own thread on your issue (you're pretty much buried out of sight in here). say
b explicitly
what you've tried already, and provide a reference link back here to help provide more context for anyone trying to help you:

hi Albert!

However I cannot access the music store, or I haven't found a post that has been able to help me yet.

this is always a good place to start:

Scott Patrie, "Can't connect to music store / CDDB", 07:18pm Oct 7, 2004 CDT

if no joy, start your own thread over at "Using itunes Music Store". State explicitly:

(1) your error message
(2) any error message number you're getting (we've got documentation on several of those)
(3) what you've already tried. sometimes it helps to provide a reference link back to your original posts outlining this:

Sep 15, 2005 10:22 AM in response to Danny Tison

hi Danny!

I tried your fix but I get a 1607 error so I can't even instal quicktime, looks like I'm screwed

no you're not. the 1607 is a standard, well-known installer error on Windows machines, and we've got plenty of documentation on it. start here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

the same general rules of troubleshooting itunes/ipod installer errors (and the specific documentation on the 1607) also apply to QT installer errors.

if the problem persists, repost your own thread on the topic. (the 1607 isn't one of Dimitry's fields, and you are pretty much hidden from most other people's view in here.) in the new thread, state explicitly what you've already tried with regard to fixing the 1607.

Dimitry. You are a genius. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been trying for days to get itunes to work after down loading newest version. I called, e-mailed, getting no usable information at all. I followed your instructions, found the WMI performance folder was inactive, activated it, down loaded all programs you listed and BINGO itunes back. Thanks again. Kathleen

hi Wayne!

do you still have a copy of your 4.9 library in your "previous libraries" folder? if so, see:

if you need further assistance, it would probably be best to start your own thread. you're pretty much buried out of view in here. it can help to provide a reference link to your original posts:

hi Rachel!

I tried installing Quicktime7...and it wont install. it keeps stopping when it get to the "updating enviromental settings" and wont go any farther

since you're on XP, you'd best go to Windows Update to make sure you have Windows Installer 3.1v2 installed on your machine.

if your problems persist, it's best to start a new thread on your own problems. you're pretty much buried out of view in here. state explicitly in your new thread what your symptoms are and what you've already tried. it can be helpful to provide reference links back to your old posts. there are instructions on how to do that in here:

hi Craig!

sorry for the delay in responding. Dimtry isn't currently following up on replies to this thread ...
b (let me be clear that there is nothing wrong with that. Dimitry is a fellow itunes user who has an external life to attend to.)
... and you're pretty much hidden from everyone else's sight in this thread.
