Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

I've followed these instructions for the last couple of days and still Itunes doesn't work. My computer is One year old and I have not had any problems with Itunes in the previous versions. I upgraded to V5 and now Itunes wont start. If you double click on the Icon you get the hour glass symbol and nothing happens. If you go to start and right click on Itunes and press open, same thing (Hour glass and nothing happens). I must have uninstalled and installed about seven times in the last four days. I have not had the error messages that everyone else is having but my Itunes now will not even start. The Itunes Icon just sits there doing nothing. This is so frustrating. Itunes 4.9 worked fine and I was happy. Now I can't get Itunes to even open. Why hasn't Apple addressed this situation? I've gone to posts on Ilounge as well and there are so many people with the same problem. The worst part is that apple customers can't use Itunes at all because of this horrible update. Anyone who has fixed this problem please let me know.

Thanks Dmitry! This worked fine for me - all of my library was recovered - I really appreciate your posting the solution to this problem, as I'm sure many others who try it will...
An interesting occurrence: when I resynced my ipod (3rd generation) , iTunes deleted all my "purchased" music from the iPod, and a window popped up stating that the software on my iPod was out of date; tells me to update to the most recent...however, I think that would start this whole cycle again. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks again!!!

OMG IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God Bless you and you are my HERO!! I have worked on this since Saturday night and I was so frustrated. I followed your direction to a tee and it worked. I AM SOO PLEASED! What a headache though. I will be careful before I update iTunes again. Thank you so much for the help. You rock my socks!

hi Anita!

hmmm. okay, if your Windows Update is dying at the moment, i think you've probably got something going with the PC underneath everything that is affecting all your installs. hang tight, i've called for reinforcements.

I know that the first picture is the standard Error 1606 warning, it is the second one that I am unsure of!

hi GB!

sorry for the delay. too much going on. had to pause to rest for a while.

let's not worry about the 1603. it's not uncommon to get a "chain" of installer errors ending in a 1603. the trick is to fix the 1606 in this case.

let's get you out of this thread so our other installer-error people can see you properly. can you repost in your own thread? title it "recalcitrant 1606". outline what steps you've already taken, and provide a reference link back to your original posts here. there are instructions on how to make a link given here:

(i'm beginning to flag a bit. a few too many 16-hour days. if you're out in public, someone else might be able to take up your case.)

love, b
