Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

hi Gary!

I have tried to follow the Apple help page for this error, but that confuses the **** out of me as all the entries in the Registry seem OK.

gaaah. every now and then in 4.9 a 1606 seemed to go creepy on us like that.

okay ... first you'd better make sure you've gone to Windows update and stocked up on your updates, just in case.

also have a read through the installshield tips and pointers on installation best practices. the Apple doc gives good stuff on this, but there's some additional weaponry available here that frequently helps if one of these beasts goes recalcitrant on us:

http://consumer.installshield.com/faq.asp#ts

... and here's a report of an alternate procedure for dealing with the 1606 (for 4.9 again, but it's better than nothing). scroll down to the very bottom of the thread to see the relevant post:

keep us posted. if you're still having trouble, and Katrina and CoJeff are about, i'll call them in for you.

hi Darlene!

Today I received a message from Microsoft Online Crash Analysis stating the GEAR driver (gearsec.exe) is responsible for my system problems and that I should remove it. I went to GEAR Software website, downloaded the driver removal file, but it could not remove the .exe.

hmmmm. 4.1 is old software. you might want to do a clean uninstall to get rid of it, and then install a completely new version rather than doing an upgrade. Note that the only version available from Apple is 5, so if you want to get an earlier version, you'll have to search here for links to third-party sites. always best to get testimonials for "old version" sites first. we've already had one case of a "4.9" turning out to be a 4.7 ...

here's the "clean" uninstall instructions:

Da Gopha, "iTfW: stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes", 09:51am Apr 5, 2005 CDT

for the driver issue: could you please start a new thread over in "importing and burning"? there's too much going on in this thread already, it will be difficult for our importing/burning gurus to pick your problem out of the crowd, and your issue deserves attention.

It seemed to me that the easiest way out of this mess was simply to revert to 4.9. I attempted to do so, but was greeted with a message saying that the download couldn't happen because there's a "later version" of the software on my computer. Grrrrr.

Okay, if I'm brave I'll try Dmitry's fix. If not, I'll wait for Apple to wade in. I'm a tech idjit, so simple is good.

Dimitry, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. You solution worked fine for me and I know that many of the very frustrated IPoders out there appreciated the time you took to share this information. My IPod now works back to normal. I hope Steve Jobs is aware of you diligence and sends you a Christmas bonus. Thank you very much for your help. Your recommendation solved my problem.

I tried your method, and it took several attempts at the same method to figure out which combination of installing the windows installer, bonjour, quicktime, itunes, and re-installing them over and over again, But I got it. Thank you for your help, However I cannot access the music store, or I haven't found a post that has been able to help me yet. If you are having a lot of difficulty, read around within some of the other posts, there are many different ways to get help with this problem until Apple is able to come up with a new update. I've been having problems with mine too. I got it to work, but read around, it's amusing to hear some of the problems that people are having, and maybe you may run across a solution to someone else's problem and they in return can help you. Good luck with everything. Albert

Here's an update to the MAPI32 solution that I just reported on.

If you use Eudora 6.1, the program creates a new version of MAPI32 that does not work with iTunes. However, if you rename the file to something like MAPI32.DLL.old and then rename the file you'll also find called MAPI32.000 to MAPI32.DLL, iTunes will work fine.

However, if you then run Eudora again, it will restore Qualcomm's version of MAPI32.DLL, and rename the Microsoft version back to MAPI32.000.

So unless there's a way to get iTunes to look in a different directory for the MAPI32.DLL file, I don't see how you can use both programs.

Note that this problem apparently exists on any computer that's not using Microsoft's MAPI32.

I'd sure like to find a work-around.

Sep 13, 2005 10:25 AM in response to Dmitry Byk

I was able to reinstall the older version of iTunes, which doesn't require MAPI32.DLL. I did this by running the iTunes 5.0 installer, and choosing "Remove."

This works, and I installed the older version of iTunes without a problem, however, the iTunes Library file isn't removed, and the older version of iTunes won't run with it there. You can simply erase the .itl file, and then iTunes will import your music folders. However, any playlists you had set up will disappear, and if you then sync your iPod, it will remove those playlists from there as well.

Now if I can only find a way to move the playlists back from the iPod to the iTunes folder, I'd be happy. Or maybe find a way to update from the iPod to the computer. Then I can just use the older version of iTunes until a iTunes is fixed.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi b noir.

First of all many thanks for your time and help! I have followed all the advice but I am afraid that I still get the Error 1606, even following David Rutter's instructions.

Here are a couple of links to pictures of the warning messages...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/79Vortex/iT2.jpg

I know that the first picture is the standard Error 1606 warning, it is the second one that I am unsure of!

Regards...
