Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

Before I try this, can anyone tell me if it is even possible. I got my daughter's used iPod which she got in 2003. I have iTunes Version 4.1.1 loaded on my Dell Dimension 4700 running XP Home w/SP2 installed.

Today I received a message from Microsoft Online Crash Analysis stating the GEAR driver (gearsec.exe) is responsible for my system problems and that I should remove it. I went to GEAR Software website, downloaded the driver removal file, but it could not remove the .exe.

Then I tried to upgrade iTunes and when I click on the Download button, nothing ever happens.

I appreciate anyone's help. Thank you.

my Dell running on windows xp is really messed up apparently. After trying to hack and slash my way through several of the suggested fix processes for the iTunes 5.0 upgrade my situation has just gotten more complicated, it started out with that "1607 Installshield" problem and then after several botched fixes the download screen just freezes when the Installshield Wizard screen says "iTunes Setup is preparing the InstallShield Wizzard, which will guide you through the program setup process. Please wait." When i tried to install Windows Installer Clean Up the Windows Installer screen says "preparing to install" and freezes. i think that ive only dug myself into a deeper hole than i began with. Someone please help me so i can get back to using my playlists on itunes rather than having to put up with this shotty realplayer v10 that i moved my music files to.

hi Robert!

I checked TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter and the only change I had to make was to WMI. I then uninstalled both iTunes 4.8 and whatever version of Quicktime was installed.

have you tried the latest toonz advice yet? (apologies, i've lost track of who has tried what already, even though a number of y'all are familiar to me.)

Hi Enrique!

I have tried everything in this post except for the mapi32.dll all to no avail. For whatever reason I do not have a mapi32.dll file on my pc (am running Windows XP Home on a Dell 4550) and don't feel comfortable loading something that I didn't need before unless someone from Apple tells me it is an absolute prerequisite.

i'm not from Apple. neither are the people in this thread. but there's excellent discussion in this thread of why you probably can't find a MAPI32.dll on your machine (and techniques on how to recover your MAPI32.dll). view all the thread:

toonz, "iTunes 5.0 "Ordinal Not Found" error" #8, 09:24pm Sep 7, 2005 CDT

do you have one of the three cited email packages that rename the dll on your machine? (apparently Mulberry also renames that dll.)

hi krizzle!

I've FINALLY managed to install iTunes 5.0 on my computer (XP) but I can only run it AFTER I have disabled all virus software. Any solutions?

that's going to depend on your virus software, and the symptoms you're encountering. what packages are you running? can you give us precise name and version details? (you can find those in the "about" screens in packages, usually.) what happens when you try to run itunes with the package running?

hi James!

I did the install of 5.0.0.35 and got the error message when I tried to load itunes. I decided to turn off my NOD32 to see if that made any difference and itunes loaded with no problem.

what is NOD32? Could you describe it for us? (the more we find out about this sort of conflict, the easier it will be to track down any existing fixes and to warn people about potential problems.)

hi Tara!

I lost my library (I have all the music on my computer but it is a pain to reconvert 5000+ songs one folder at a time) so I am still irritated in that sense

maybe things aren't quite as bad as they seem. see:

hi Karasushebi (what a lovely alias)

"Could not start the Windows Management Instrumentation service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start." Is there an alternate way to start that service or something?

hmmmm. okay, try toonz's technique outlined here:

toonz, "iTunes5+Quicktime 7 Error 1920" #1, 11:39am Sep 12, 2005 CDT

post back if that doesn't work for you. i
b think
that i've seen
b another
technique to do this, and i think i've got the thread bookmarked.

"1628: Failed to Complete Installation "

hi Xi Deng!

haven't i already replied to you off in another thread? just in case i haven't, here's the documentation on the 1628:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

this happened since I uninstalled the ipod and itunes v4.9(druing the process, message poped up saying"no enough space left in C drive" is it because of that cause all the problems?)

... how large is your C drive, and how full is it? you can find out by going into your "My Computer", right-clicking on your C-drive icon, and selecting "properties".

how much
b used space
and how much
b free space
do you have there?

hi Anita!

it started out with that "1607 Installshield" problem and then after several botched fixes the download screen just freezes when the Installshield Wizard screen says "iTunes Setup is preparing the InstallShield Wizzard, which will guide you through the program setup process. Please wait." When i tried to install Windows Installer Clean Up the Windows Installer screen says "preparing to install" and freezes.

good lord ... okay, let's start with simple things and then steadily get more aggressive (and/or call in reinforcements, as seems appropriate).

(1) have you been to Windows Update recently? if not, go for a sweep through there and pick up all available updates.

(2) empty your temp directory thoroughly. follow the instructions given here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

okay, after doing that, can you get the cleanup utility to launch?

keep us posted.
