Error Code: -3 and Error -1404

When I attempted to download the latest iTunes update, it appears as though iTunes installed fine, but there was an error with the included Quicktime. The error code is 3.

Then when trying to run iTunes, the message comes up that I need Quicktime version 7.0.3, and what I have is 7.0.2, so re-install.

After going around in that circle a few times, I download the standalone Quicktime installer, but that yields error 1404 and 1402.

Next, I uninstall iTunes, discard the relevant files in the iPod bin folder, and attempt to again install iTunes. Same error messages as originally.

I don't know how to proceed now. I have no access to iTunes or updating my iPod. These "upgrades" always seem to be a headache...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

a
b 1404?
just doublechecking this, because a 1404 would be desperately exotic. does the text with that start by
saying:

Could not delete key

(what is way more familiar in this context is the 1406, which says "Could not write value ... to key".)

Hello b noir.

You stated "what is way more familiar in this context is the 1406, which says "Could not write value ... to key." I keep getting this same error and when I came across this discussion I was hoping I would get passed the error some way with someone's help. Will you be that help? If you can tell me and to whom it may concern on how to get past this and finish installing iTunes I'm sure we would all appreciate it very much. Thank you.

OK same thing as me (I think :S)

BUT when I tried to uninstall iTunes the 2nd time I got told (cant remember exact message) that another installation was in process so cant uninstall. ok. fine. (no idea why this came up)

then I tried going back through all the help pages I could find and swearing at myself because I hadn't written down the error codes.

so I then download the standalone quicktime. it downloads perfectly on my computer. when I try to install this msg came up : error 1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime.

Then I follow exactly every possible thing to fix this error. Right down to changing the windows registry. And fiddling with hidden folders.

That doesn't work.

I get this something-or-other.msi thing is missing. So I try to download that. and N get the installation in process. Not the anything is actually installing on my computer.

So then I go and delete everything I downloaded and try again to do iTunes. nope.

so I give up.

then today I noticed in mcafee that Windows® installer 3.1 was in blocked apps. I didn't block it but I clicked allow full access, downloaded iTunes again, and now everything is fine 😀

hi Ben! (and JustSomeUser!)

but at some point a do recall a 1406 with the message that you reference.

okay, let's start with this document:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93865

... and if the problems persist, let's try the Adam technique:

Adam Hicks, "Quicktime 7 (Resolution for some install / permission error)", 05:06pm Oct 1, 2005 CDT

... however, if you find yourself in a situation where the registry doesn't accept key changes, try shutting down all background applications prior to the regedit:

keep us posted.

Hi b:

I've tried the methods you recommended in your helpful post, including the Adams Hicks solution (in the process getting into some areas where I am REALLY not comfortable, like the registry, but following the step-by-step instructions enabled me to avoid blowing up my computer, at least in the short term).

Unfortunately, nothing has worked thus far. However, I did manage to find an older (version 5.0) iTunes installer in my Recycle Bin, resurrected it, and installed it. My iTunes is functional again, albeit with an older version.

But the older version wasn't broke, so I don't need to fix it. I don't particularly care about video capability, so I will probably be using version 5.0.1.4 when Apple is on version 95.0. I think I've learned my lesson...

Thanks very much for your attention and assistance. I truly appreciate it.

Ben

Harry,

Here is a post that I added three weeks ago. It includes a solution that worked for me. I hope that it works for you! Good luck.

Hey troubled Podheads,

I was one of the legion with problems in downloading iTunes6 and QT7 for Windows until I tried something (I must say that I am not a pc wizard and I don't know the technical reasons for why the following worked, it just did! So if there are any pc geeks out there, be sure to chime in). Anyway, this is what I did. First uninstall QuickTime if you do have it on your pc. If not, just go to the next step:

Go to START, then RUN. Type in regedit and then click OK. Your REGISTRY EDITOR should open. You should see HKEY LOCALMACHINE in the scroll down menu on the left, with a small box to its left. Make sure that the inside of the box has a negative sign - this will open up the next set of subfolders. Next, make sure that the subfolder, SOFTWARE, has a negative sign in the small box to its left. Next, make sure that there is a negative sign in the box next to the subfolder entitled, Apple Computer, Inc. You'll see at least three subfolders: iPod, iTunes and QuickTime. Click once on the QuickTime folder until it is highlighted and then delete it. You will be asked if you want to delete QuickTime and its subfolders. Click ok and then close out the Registry Editor.

Next, download the stand alone QuickTime 7 at this link (you may have to cut and paste this link to open this website):
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

When you download the stand alone QT7, you may get a couple of error messages (I did), but if you repeatedly click ok (like I did), the QT7 player should load with no problems.

Again, I am no pc geek, but this worked for me and I have gained access to iTunes6 (with video capacity) and my complete library is intact. Nothing like trial and error!! Good luck -- I hope this works for all of you frustrated Podheads out there!

I am also suffering from the error code 3 problem. I was just wondering what 'mcafee' was as it seems to be fairly crucial to the seemingly simple fix that is the last comment on this thread. You can probably tell I am not exactly an expert pc user. I really wish I hadn't decided to try the new itunes version.........
Last time I upgraded it took me a week to iron out the bugs. I thought apple were supposed to be good at this sort of thing.

hi Fay!

I am also suffering from the error code 3 problem.

hmmm. we're going to try a "semi-diagnostic" careful standalone QT 7.0.3 install. See the instructions here:

b noir, "QuickTime Installation FAILED!! "Error Code: -1"" #1, 09:31am Oct 22, 2005 CDT

if you get an error messages on the standalone, what do they say? (include error message numbers if you get any.)

if the install goes through, does your itunes open properly?

I've followed all the instructions and this is the error I get when I try to install the standalone...

QuickTime Error
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QuickTime. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact support personal.

When I go into the registry to change the permission for that key I get another error..

Security
! You do not have permission to view the current permission seting for QuickTime, But you can make permission changes.

So, after I change the permission to everyone I get another error...

Security
X Unable to save permission changes for QuickTime.
Access denied

Please let me know if you can help. I've spent hours trying to get my Ipod setup. I also get many other errors (ie 1628, 1402 and 1603 and 2093) when I try to install Itunes and Ipod software.

Thanks,
dcrew

I've tried installing iTunes/Quicktime today on a second computer at home (my first one has been running it w/o problems for months now), but I keep getting Error -3, QuickTime could not install.
I cleared the QuickTime files in the registry, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, but to no avail.

I downloaded the standalone QuickTime file, but it tells me that "the file was corrupted, please download again". I tried redownloading, still no change. I even turned off Spyware protection/virus checker as suggested somewhere. I read through the threads linked to from this topic, but I still can't seem toget it right.

What am I missing?
