Battery charges but iPod won't work when disconnected from USB

This is a brand new iPod Nano 2nd gen. It was just opened 2 days ago. It synchs fine, and the battery charges to full capacity, but when it's disconnected from the USB it won't turn on.

Hold button makes no difference. Reset (Menu+select button) doesn't work. Updating software doesn't work. Even a hard reset doesn't work. I've done an extensive web search and found a few people with the same problem but no solutions are ever posted. Can anyone help?

I'm having the exact same issue. Second generation red Nano I received as a gift about 18 months ago. I was using my first generation Nano and didn't open the box until 2 days ago. The new Nano works fine connected to my computer, but the minute I unplug it it goes dead and will not respond. I've tried everything - restored, reset, tried different USB cables, charged with the AC adaptor, tried with a dock and without a dock....no change. Has anyone else gotten any further advice on this problem?

Same here and I've owned my green 4gb nano for almost a year. Recently itunes updated to 7.7 and I've had problems with my ipod since. I've done the R's thing, even back-up the itunes, still nothing works!

It plugs in and flashes DO Not disconnect forever!!! It charges fine, it syncs okay, and I eject it fine but when I go to play the screen immediately starts fading until you don't see anything. This is very frustrating I love my ipod.

Oh and another detail, everytime I back up, restore, or add music from itunes now this error pops up saying that there is not disc and my options are to cancel, try again, or continue. You tell me??

Is there anyone (APPLE employee) willing to help it's customers????

Brand new iPod Nano 2nd gen. Same problem here, have charged battery fully, downloaded a song from iTunes and it works fine when connected to USB or plug socket, but once it's dis-connected from a power source, nothing happens, completely dead. Did all the troubleshooting bits, to no effect. I was begining to think it was just mine, so I'm glad to see I'm not alone with this problem. HELP!

Got in touch with the Apple support guy who told me that, although I only bought my iPod 2nd gen. a week ago, it's old stock and out of warranty, he checked the serial number and said that it doesn't show up on their warranty list. Basically there's nothing they can do in terms of replacing this faulty (which I presume it is) iPod.
Means I need to get an extra long usb lead for when I'm out and about if I want to listen to my tunes.

Here is what I was told when I spoke to a computer/apple specialist. The issue he said was probably the battery, now the battery can be replaced by either with the use of an external one (which was a the least exspensive) or find an apple support technical store or location and have a new battery installed, which can be VERY expensive. He told me that there are battery do-it-yourself kits out there available but apple no longer has them in stock and the kits are "tricky" because the ipods are put together with tiny screws. I tried to locate screws on my own ipod and couldn't find them. In the end he told me that if an external battery was not an option then just buying a new ipod would be the best. I guess that depends on what one does with their ipod, I of course use it for walking, running, workout, mowing the grass. But that is all the information I have. I hope this helps everyone else out.

Thanks TamJo. You've confirmed what I thought the problem was. A new one is probably now on the cards, but it annoys me that a brand new iPod [bought only a week ago] has no warranty [according to Apple]. What's more annoying is that I don't have to option of returning to the shop it was bought and insisting on a replacement from them.

I also spent 1/2 hour on the phone on hold to speak with an Apple rep (whose English was a bit difficult to understand). She said that since my Ipod had been purchased more than 90 days ago, I had no support options available to me. Under further prodding, she told me that I could take the Ipod to an Apple store to be fixed which would cost $59 if the problem is only the battery, and $159 if it was anything beyond just the battery. I was upset that a brand new Ipod out of the box doesn't work and I'm basically you-know-what outta luck. It did teach me to make sure I determine a new Ipod's functionality within 90 days of buying it! I ended up buying a new Nano (which is probably exactly what Apple wants) although I certainly don't need video capability on a Nano I use primarily for workouts.
