Battery charges but iPod won't work when disconnected from USB

This is a brand new iPod Nano 2nd gen. It was just opened 2 days ago. It synchs fine, and the battery charges to full capacity, but when it's disconnected from the USB it won't turn on.

Hold button makes no difference. Reset (Menu+select button) doesn't work. Updating software doesn't work. Even a hard reset doesn't work. I've done an extensive web search and found a few people with the same problem but no solutions are ever posted. Can anyone help?

The batteries in these units are dying shortly after the 16 month mark, and for expensive hardware like the iPod you may want to continue enjoying it for a bit longer.
Instead of sending the unit back to apple and getting it repaired at a cost of almost 50% of the value of the unit, you could fix it yourself.
I have done this myself. I had no problem popping off the top, popping off the bottom, removing the four retaining screws, removing the headphone jack, removing the retaining clip, and slipping the unit out if the case. Things may be more difficult at the next step as the battery leads were soldered to the mother board. Before attempting to de-solder the leads be sure to remove all of the epoxy gumming them to the motherboard.

Hope this helps. Hope the host doesn't remove this one too!

My IPOD battery was only lasting about 10 minutes after a full charge.. So I went and bought a DIY Battery Kit of ebay, and replaced the battery, and it worked for about a week, then all of a sudden, when I would fully charge it, once I took the charger off, the IPOD would shut down. And now it only works when plugged into the wall. So im having the same issue as everyone else, but do not want to goto APPLE to get this fixed, because thats a rippoff to me.

I dont think its the battery thats the problem, since I obviously have a new one. So anymore input on this issue would be great.

Hey everybody, I'm the one who originally posted the thread. Wow, it's amazing (shocking) to see how many of you are going through the same issue. I hauled myself to an Apple store, had it checked and was told that the battery was bad. A new one costs $59.99. Apple offers no warranty since the "sale date" is more than a year ago (even though he admitted it's a manufacturer's defect). So basically we all got the big shaft.

I ended up giving my nano to some kid who thinks he can use it for parts. I never want to see another nano (or Apple product) again. Apple, you lost a long-time customer.
