iPod corrupt? Unknown error (1439)

My iPod had been working perfectly fine for a couple of months now. It has 80GB. When I plugged it in today, it had a popup that said my iPod is corrupt and needs to be restored or replugged. I did this for about 10 times and each time a pop up says: The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439).

hiya, games are a funny business. I bought tetris for my 5th gen ipod. Then they renamed it "classic" and the tetris would no longer work. After a long email to and fro with apple, it emerged that they had CHANGED the game to a different version. In the even I got a refund and was able to purchase the new Tetris.

So I'd check what version your games are. I suspect you find the same applies.

With reference to non-existent music: It may well be that they show in itunes but not on ipod due to incorrect format. you can right click a song and select "convert selection for ipod" (or "aac"). If ipod does not recognise the format, it will not play/sync it.

have you all checked your pc's that there are no known viruses? I have run ipod for years and years on BOTH PC and Mac, and it was ipod that convinced me to buy my first mac.

I can understand your frustration though with a product that promises a dream and that does not happen:
1) I am on my FOURTH (NEW!! 160gb) ipod ("classic"), as I had nothing but problems with the previous models (all since Jan 2008!!). Apple willingly exchanged the ipods each time. Now, whilst running itunes 7.7.1, I do NOT !! install the latest ipod firmware update (for mac that is 1.1.2), as each time, I installed it, I had massive sync problems. so I have declined that update, and my ipod is running perfectly now.

2) the new ipods are a bit fickly, as the technology that enables them to be such a big harddive (there a 1 Tb drives now that are the size of the old 2.3gB drives!) into such a thin shell. Dropping is not a good a idea. The older, chunkier ones were much sturdier in my books, but if you want video you need the new ones.

3) If your itunes library is uncorrupted and fully working, then you NEVER loose your music, as ipod is designed as a read only device that itunes writes to.
So "restoring" may take time, but can sort out a lot of problems. I "enable disk use" from within itunes and have used the "hidden ipod commands" http://www.command-tab.com/2006/03/30/hidden-ipod-commands/ that have solved many problems without upset.

The very best of luck (but do remember to check if you had any viruses in your windows machines; i have had years of great experience with ipod and windows with no hitches)

I bought a brand new Nano 8GB and had never used itunes before so went and downloaded the most recent version (of course) thinking that was the best course, then spent DAYS loading CDs only to find it would not sync and the dreaded 1439 error!!! I have tried all the suggestions noted here - downloading older versions is a great idea except that you have to reload your entire library because it won't recognize it. Even after that I still cannot get itunes to recognize that my ipod is even connected. Yes, I tried every USB port on my tower, and NO I don't have any viruses. I am so ****** off! What a HUGE waste of time and money! What is the fix - keep sending them back to apple? I don't have time for this crap, I just want my music to play.

I am having the same problem...I was using my ipod, watching some video, and the whole thing went blank. I turned it back on to find that it wasn't recognizing anything was there. I got it back home, plugged it in, and itunes told me it needed a restore. So I restored it, re-synced. It froze itunes. I tried to force quit itunes, but it didn't work, and I couldn't eject my ipod. So I reset it, and the whole thing happened again. I had to disable automatic syncing and manually move over data. I had most of my stuff loaded (3000+ songs and lots of video) and it crashed again. So frustrating. btw, it's a 80G ipod classic, purchased a little over a month ago.

Hiya,

now, when you restored your 80 gB classic, did you upgrade the firmware to 1.1.2?
If so, do not.
I refuse as my firmware 1.1.1 works the ipod great and the only trouble started (twice) on trying to update the firmware.
Try a hard factory reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339

Then, charge fully with AC charger (this was recommended to me twice in an Apple store)

Afterwards, use USB to connect to your computer and do not allow it to upgrade to 1.1.2

(See incidental article about ipod touch: http://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2007/12/02/downgraderestore-ipod-touch-firmware-t o-version-111-using-os-x/ this might even work on ipod classic - you've got nothing to loose); also have a look at Apple's updates: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
